Anyone have an idea how Norm Hamlett pulls off the intro part on this tune? |

If it's the Merle Haggard version, I almost positive that's a 6 string guitar, not a pedal steel. That's how I play it.------------------

I believe I came across this tablature once. Try a search I'm sure it's in there. If not then I apologize, I'll do some searching of my own too.------------------ Darren James Sillito Carter D-10 8P 5K Nashville 400, Transtubefex |

**I HAVE NEVER WRITTEN TAB BEFORE - IF THERE IS A BETTER WAY TO WRITE THIS - P L E A S E LET ME KNOW!! :-)I believe Norm has done it on a few recording versions of Mama Tried. I play it on Pedal Steel and twin it with the lead player. 1 ____________________________________________________ 2 ____________________________________________________ 3 __5B---3B___________________________________________ 4 __5----3____________5----3__________________________ 5 __________3A________5A---3A_________________________ 6 ___________________________3B___4B-5B___4B-5B_______ 7 ____________________________________________________ 8 ________________________________4--5____4--5________ 9 ____________________________________________________ 10____________________________________________________ . . . . . .
This can also be done "up an octave" for effect with a lead player. I am not sitting in front of my guitar at the moment. Gosh, I hope that this is right. ha ha

I'll give these a try, thanks.I did see Merle last spring out in CA, at the CrazyHorse. Norm played the 2nd 1/2 of the intro, and the whole lead break. I suppose I could've asked him then, but I didn't. rgds, jmc |

That was James Burton's signature kick-off to the recorded version of "Mama Tried" done on a Telecaster, I believe.RB |

I think that that was Roy Nichols.James played on Working Man's Blues and Bottle Let Me Down and a few others but I don't think he played on Mama Tried. I may be wrong. Also, Phil Baugh played on Swingin' Doors. WHO..can say for sure?? ------------------ Tim Harr - Carter D-10 8 & 9 - Troy Cook Jr Band ~ Stardust Nashville Recording Artist |
