We lost one of our best members in the Alaska Airlines tragedy: Dean Forshee.Dean and I swapped gigs occasionally. He was a good player and friend, and a real steel enthusiast. He contributed regularly to the Forum. His opinions were well thought out and well written. My deepest sympathies to Dean's family and others close to him. We're still working with KPFA on arranging and scheduling the event and any support via E-Mail that folks send will let KPFA know that Dean had friends in the music world who want to see this happen. Does anyone have a photo of Dean they could post here? I never met him, though I've read his posts from time to time. I'd like to be able to visualize him as I focus my thoughts on him at this time. Thanks, Jim |

I will try to get a photo this morning and post it by afternoon. BTW, we have learned that all KPFA broadcasts are available online, though they have a max. number of online users of 60. All local folks within range of the station should tune via conventional radio. We will know on Friday when this tribute will be scheduled and I will let you know the date and time. In the meantime, please send music selections that you think would be appropriate me. We will pass them on to KPFA, along with selection choices from his family. |

As Steel Guitarists we are part of a unique brotherhood. Although I have never personally met Dean, I always enjoyed his intelligent contributions to our forum. It is wonderful that our Creator has a wonderful purpose for Mankind and has provided us with the wonderful hope of a ressurection and a perfect life thereafter. Thank you so much, Sonia. And of course when I offered help posting the photo, via email, I had no idea what an unnecessary gesture it was. Thanks for helping us visualize, as Jim put it, as we think about Dean. |

I too, am saddened about this. No question, a great and well loved person, as well as a steel guitarist. And this may not be the appropriate time to bring this up...........but....When in hell are they gonna straighten out the airline industry?.......You hear it everyday....if it isn't this, it's that. Pardon me, but I remember when I was only a pre-teenager and me and my whole family [5] every year for awhile, flying out to see Uncle Frenchy & Aunt Lorraine in Pasadena... we always had a great and safe and funfilled flight......it was crowded, I suppose.....but people back then were curteous. Hardly anyone was rude...and no one seemed to be much in a hurry to get ON or OFF their plane. Because.........it was an enjoyable, was supposed to be an enjoyable, endeavour.Godbless Dean Forshee ------------------ Chip Williams U-12 8X5 {{ POST YOUR REPLIES TO THIS RANT IN "OFF TOPIC", PLEASE. -b0b- }}[This message was edited by b0b on 05 February 2000 at 02:23 PM.] |

It is very sweet that people who did not know Dean personaly are saying such kind things about him and although Dean is not here to see that, as a personal friend of Dean's, I appreciate it for him. Dean and I exchanged e-mails a few weeks ago because he was planning a trip to Maui this summer with his wife and wanted to get together with me. He was looking forward to seeing the island and I was looking forward to showing it off. Very sad.[This message was edited by Don McClellan on 05 February 2000 at 03:20 PM.] |

Hi Group:The way the television media described the last few minutes and moments of the Alaska Airlines plane crash, it must have been as "close to hell" as it could possibly get for everyone on board that plane. I didn't know Dean Forshee personally but part of his written legacy is here on the Steel Guitar Forum. Please spend a few moments, as I have, looking through some of Dean's postings. You can easily do this by tapping the Search link on the top of each of the Forum pages, place Dean's name in the author line and his posting will come up. Rest in peace, Dean! ------------------

My gosh..... My very sincerest condolances to Dean's family. Such a loss. Jetliners are magnificent pieces of modern technology. And when flying in one, one is so completely and totally dependant on that machine's integrity and soundness. And when they fail, one has what must seem an eternity of complete helplessness between the beginning and the end of the crisis. The saving grace is just that the crises are statistically few. I feel absolutely awful for every soul on that plane. I didn't know I had an affiliation with one of the passengers -- Dean -- until I read this thread. |

I never met Dean, but he bought my triple-neck National. He was a great guy, true steel lover. The last I talked with him, he had'nt messed with the National much. Don't know if he ever did. If someone could let his family know that my family and myself will be praying for him and them. And the next time I play my non-pedal Dean, it'll be for you......Brian |

I had said this all before, but it was lost during the last few days and I feel I have to repeat it.I met Dean in 1980 when he came out to audition for my spot in the band I was leaving. For some reason, he never followed through. I didn't think anything of it at the time and soon forgot it completely. Until about 3 years ago when I first signed on this forum. Dean saw my name and right away got in touch. He confided in me that after hearing my play and sing, he chickened out. I was shocked cause frankly, I ain't that good and he was. Never the less, he and I got much better acquainted over the past few years via this incredible medium and this incredible forum. I could usually count on some response from him on one of my off beat comments or observations. I came to expect them. I had just recently got ICQ and found his number but he required authorization to be added to my contact list. I was waiting for his reply. His reply that will never come. This event hit me real hard. When an airliner goes down in Africa or Asia or South America, it all seems so distant and abstract. I never felt too much direct sadness or sense of loss at the news. This is so much different. I can't discribe it. Thank you Sonia for your personal reply to my message to Dean. I know you had way too many things to help with. I appreciate you taking the time to write. To Deans Family, God Bless. To Dean, Thank you for your friendship. BD |

Sonia, thanks for everything you are doing to keep us informed. Very nice website. I had met Dean a couple times and am deeply saddened by this. One thing that really fascinates me, is watching the coverage of an airplane crash. I can sit for hours in front of the TV watching the same stuff over & over. I always read the passenger list to see if I knew anyone on that flight. I am always relieved that I don't know anyone. This time proved different. When I read his name, the first thing I did was post a topic here to find out if it was indeed Dean. I was praying that Dean himself would answer that it was not. Sorry to ramble. This hit me hard after the recent death of my sister. God Bless Dean and his family ------------------ Carter D10 8p/10k www.sinkler.com |

Hi everyone, I'd like to introduce myself as a friend of Dean's since 1972 and someone who can take at least partial credit for pushing him to take up the pedal steel. Boy, did that pay off!He lived for several years in Northwest in the late 70s and early 80s, and we've been great friends all these years. It is really heartwarming to read all the things from people who knew him (or didn't know him at all) through his music. My family and I will be in Walnut Creek for the memorial this weekend and I look forward to meeting any of you friends who are there. |

Dean's wife Susan asked me to pass this information on to the Forum - - "There will be a memorial for Dean at Walnut Creek Presbyterian Church on Saturday, 2/12 at 1 P.M. The address is 1801 Lacassie; Walnut Creek, California. It's near the Walnut Creek BART station, just off California Blvd. This will be a program of love and joy and I hope it will be a comfort to us all." |

I'm just back from a trip to Orlando, so I wasn't on "online" this weekend. But I met fellow forumist Paul Crawford up there and he told me the sad news. I haven't known Dean well at all, but this news makes me feel especially sad:A couple of weeks ago Dean had a little lapsteel and amp up for sale on the Buy & Sell Forum and I called him up and we made a deal. He mentioned that he would try to ship it out before he was to leave for a trip to I didn't pay too much attention where to. He sent it out on the day I understand that he was scheduled to leave, and I received the guitar and amp not too long ago and absolutely love it. Now, I don't know how shall or will feel the next time I pick this guitar up to play it. I think, I'll do my best to play it in the memory of somebody I didn't take up on my opportunity to learn to know better when there was still time to... maybe my way of sending prayers out to him and his... We all got so used to these news of airplane crashes, served to us by the news media in a very unpersonal way... ValueJet, TWA, Swissair, Agipt Air and now Alaska Air... and somehow all we hear is "X-number of passangers or crew memembers" not humans or fathers/mothers, sons and daughters, oncles and aunts and grandparents or just friends. We are led to believe that there a are "only" 100, 200 or so "fatalities"... Well, maybe we also think of their immediate families... But, it can NEVER happen to ME. Imagine, 100 or 200 out of 250 Millions people in this country alone, chances to win the lottery seem greater. We are so numbed. But, Dean Forshee's passing shall show us how far out ONE human reaches out. We now all miss him and all of a sudden we became part of something we thought only happens in our TV. ... J-D.

CNN has a list of the souls lost on the flight at (click here) . I took the liberty of sending them a message noting the URL for Dean (in a previous post, above); maybe they'll link it up to his name, as they have done with some others. It's good for the world to know a litle about the humanity and lives of those who's names are listed there. [This message was edited by b0b on 07 February 2000 at 11:08 AM.] |
