Johnny will be getting a pacemaker put in tomorrow morning. He has been having some problems with a low heart rate for a while now, and his cardiologist feels this would take care of the problem. His heart is fine otherwise (just did a stress test a month ago. They were getting the arrangements made for this and Johnny told me "I hope this doesn't mess up my playing behind the beat like Jimmy Day did on ballads". We laughed and I told him that after Tuesday, he'll probably play everything like Doug Jernigan (ballads too). Next time he plays "Touch My Heart" it will sound like "Orange Blossom Special" Please join me in saying a prayer for him in the morning, and that he'll start feeling a lot better soon. Joan |

Johnny, you can count on Barbara and I saying lot's of prayers for you. Our Lord will take good care of you. And as always, we'll send our prayers out for Joan also. Now as for the "meter" thing you mentioned, well I suppose you can ask the doctor to install a knob on your pacemaker so that you can dial in the tempo you want...whatcha think !!!!! Love you guys, ....Roy and Barbara

Hi Roy and Barb..getting things set for this procedure tomorrow. Johnny liked the idea of a knob for the tempo. He may just mention that in the morning, especially when they give him the "I don't care what you're doing to me" medicine. Thanks for your prayers. I'll be sure to update you on how he's doing. He'll be in overnight for sure and then probably go home the next day, hopefully. Joan[This message was edited by Joan Cox on 15 November 2004 at 08:45 AM.] |

I know a lot about Pacemakers, having worked and trained extensively with a company that is a world leader making them. The good news is the operation is simple and has an extremly high sucess rate. I personally spoke to many patients who said their quality of like has greatly improved. Any surgery is serious business, but this is a good'un. |

Johnny, Maybe you could ask for a "speed" knob to be installed so you could control the rate yourself to match the tempo (?). Serious though, you are in our prayers and we're glad you're taking the high road attitude. Mike & Teriney

Joan and Johnny, the Dr,s put a pace maker in me 9 weeks ago and I really feel good. Lot's of energy and great time, 60 beats a minute. Just don't raise your arm above your head for 8 weeks, you don't want to pull the wires loose. Al |

Johnny,I have never met you except that I know how sincere you and Joan are about everything you do. I keep up with you through my friends, Tom McDonald and Bill Simmons so I think I know you both pretty well, anyway. These high tech things really work these days. Ask McDonald-- he deals in heart matters every day in his company's business. Hey Johnny-- just lay back and enjoy it ??You will feel 100% better afterward and your fine pick'n will again be welcomed by everyone who attends a live performance you give in the future. Just be careful of those two guys I mentioned because they BOTH can cause a lot of "stress"! ha ha ! Jodie and I will be offering our prayers for you !! John |

Thanks to all of you for your well wishes. They took him in at around 7:40AM this morning. We're at Methodist Hospital in Dallas, and I work here also. I'll go back up and check in a couple of hours. I'm going to print off these responses so he can read them. Bill, we're gonna have to settle for "sugar free" or "low fat" ice cream from now on, I think. Joan |

Update on Johnny: They brought him back this morning around 9:30AM. He's doing very good, and is resting now. Heart rate is 60 beats a minute; a lot more than it was before (in the 40s). I'm back in my office here at the hospital. Thanks to everyone for the prayers and well wishes. He said he was already feeling better than he has in a couple of months. Joan |

Update: Thanks again, everyone. I'll be taking Johnny home today. When I got to his room this morning, he was dressed and sitting in a chair, and had already took a walk around the area. He said "I feel so much better". I haven't heard him say that in a very long time. Joan |

Johnny called me this morning feeling great and said he is ready to get back to building guitars next Monday. All of us at MSA sure miss him. He said he is not supposed to pick up anything over 10 pounds for the next FIVE years, but that just don't sound right to me. I think he's trying to get us to carry his equipment and get out of some "honeydo's" Joan may have planned for him. |
