The Sierra Instrument Company was purchased today by a gentleman from here in the Pacific Northwest, who plans to continue production of Sierra Steel Guitars.
Tom Baker will be back to making Sierra Steel Guitars!

I have the first and probably the only MSA with Sierra's interchangable pickup system. My guitar was retrofitted by Tom Bradshaw with Tony's permission. His plan was to make the system available to other manufacturers, and to players of other brands who wanted to be able to change pickups.

I hope the new owners continue this policy.

Glad to hear this great news. I love my Sierra and would hate to have to eventually give it up due to lack of parts availability.

Go, Sierra!

Alright. The Scotsman's name is Ed, and he is/was representing in some capacity, Santa Cruz Guitars, presumably out of California.

Tom Baker will be presumed to be the assembler when/as the inventory gets accounted for, current and possibly past orders/requests for parts, and/or guitars gets compiled, and the "flow" is able to start.

That's all I know about it. This from as direct a source as anybody's going to have at this point.

It's going to take a little while to get the "flow" going, so patience on Sierra owners' customers' parts is going to be rewarded in a fashion. At this time it looks like it will be rewarded by the Superb Craftsmanship of Tom Baker, that IMHO as well as others' has brought Sierras' strong points to the forefront over the years. He is currently performing the inventory, and has compiled the email resuests I forwarded to be in the ongoing proces as it goes forward.

(background music fades.....)

Now you know as much as anybody.

Maybe even more than some.

I have just ONE QUESTION:
I purchased a new BIGSBY Quad with six pedals in 1956; and,
an Emmons stdrd.set-up...in 1972.

Both of these instruments have lived and worked hard over the years; countless dance halls, lounges, radio, television and recording studios. They've played all kinds of country/western swing and Hawaiian as well as pop tunes. They've even seen more than their share of ex-wives.

Not once have I required "A NEW PART".....

Thousands of hours of playing, packing and trucking this gear all over the country and still never a "break-down".

WHY all the concern about "replacement parts" for the fine Sierra line? Just curious.........

Over the years I've seen many people on the forum looking for, and needing many parts for many different brands of pedal steel guitars.

I'm sure that many folks keep spare parts, just in case they may need them in the future. I would scramble for parts if I knew that a factory was closing, whether I needed them or not, at that time. I suppose that is the reason for this Sierra part feeding frenzy.

Come to think of it, I've seen (or remembered) very few posts for Sierra parts in the past.

In response to RAY MONTEE's ??
Years ago I played in a nice Holiday Inn lounge. As a very tall couple danced near me,one of them tripped and both came tumbling down on top of me and my steel. I needed replacement parts immediately. So did my steel. The steel was a Dekley, which was built very solid, much like a Sierra.

The only Sierra parts I've ever needed were rods of the right length to add another change to a pedal. Seems that I always have plenty of bell cranks, and nothing has ever broken on my Sierra guitars.

Ray,
Many Steel players love to experiment with their copedants.

This requires spare parts.

I can't tell you what fun I've had, having an idea for an additional raise or lower on an existing pedal, adding another pedal or knee lever, and being able to drive 10 minutes over to the Sierra shop to see our buddy Tom Baker, and get parts AND SEVICE on the same day.

I regularly talk with folks at conventions and here on this forum, who also share my excitement and adventure in developement of new ideas for pedal/lever changes, who count on the availability of parts for the brand that they play, in order to make their ideas a reality.

Playing is only one part of this instrument that, in and of itself, can keep one busy for a lifetime or two.

Reading your description of your expierience with your Bigsby and Emmons, I have to believe that there are many others who just want to play, and aren't interested in the underneath of their steels.

Nothing wrong with it.

But for those of us steel players whose minds can't stop thinking "what if!..." well, it sure is nice to be able to implement your ideas!... and you will need parts to do it!

I have a Sierra drawer, and Emmons Push-Pull Drawer, and a Sho-Bud drawer, with parts that I have collected for this and that idea over the years.

It's an extension of the hobby!

I remember you telling me your steel took a dive once, and you needed to replace a broken tuner.
Sometimes folks need a part for that type of accident, too.

Why would one want to jerry-rig or hardware-sore fix their steel, when they could get parts from the original manufacturer?

Well, it might have been a bit of a curse, but Sierra fabricates most of the parts for their steel guitars right there at their factory.
So, no Sierra, no custom parts.

Please let me know if I can answer your question in further detail, as I could praise the fruits of Sierra's labors for quite a while longer if need be!
I think their steels are great!
Great folks too!

Hey there Pete Burak........you almost sound like a salaried spokesperson for Sierra. That's fine, you do a good job at it. Maybe more folks around the country will now have the opportunity to see/hear you sing and play at the host of steel guitar shows that dot the countryside. Hang in there and keep on pitchin'! Those of us here on the outside of the loop, need a good man on the inside. Anxiously awaiting your factual updates with bated breath.

I happily and gladly Voulenteer my time in the Sierra Booth at conventions.
I love talking "Steel" with people, about Sierra, or any brand steel for that matter!
Playing in the booth, helping people with adjustments on their steels at shows, etc... is my version of FUN!
The fact that the Sierra Session model steel is such a precision instrument, yet so easy to do Copedant changes on, is great for like minded players like myself.
On the other hand, a D10 with the industry standard setup, might be something you would really enjoy, Ray... not to mention one of their fine Lap Steels!

Hey there Pete! Thanks for the suggestion and I don't doubt your sincerity for even a micro-moment. HOWEVER, Sierra has never given me what any one of my 60+ year old Rickenbachers have been able to provide.
Until then, I'm a Bigsby-Emmons-Rickenbacher kinda guy.........sorta.

Another big Sierra fan here, glad to see they're back, I have some parts I need to order to do some experimentin' like PB is talking about.

I was seriously thinking about ordering a Sierra lap steel at the ISGC this year (played one the year before it was SWEET) , but when I got there oops no Sierra.

And then, I bought a Melobar lap steel off ebay last week just before I heard Sierra was back, although I guess no guarantee the Sierra lap steel will be back.

BTW this Melobar is black (slightly metalflake), 6 string, overall body shape is a long rectangle (no curves), 24 1/2 scale, BL L-500 blade pickup, Grover tuners, anyone know what model this is called?

Well now Peter....I never intended anything I've said from day one about Sierra to end up in a Peter vs. Montee kinda verbal slug fest either here on the SGF or anywhere else.
I've always said I think the Sierra is a beautiful guitar. They really shine! They have an appearance of elegance; not cheesy glitter and sparkle. Rugged too, I'd imagine
Enough folks are committed to playing them and that wouldn't be the case if they were in fact, anything less than a great instrument to have/play.
I hate to see ANYTHING of QUALITY go down the tube. Hard times come and go. My comment was merely to determine, if I could, of all the talkers out there, if there was just one or fifty that might truly care enough to jump into a "group project" in an effort to save this worthy instrument.
As far as I know, I DO live closer to the old Sierra factory than anyone else on this forum and I simply made the offer, a sincere offer at that, in an attempt to serve any of you guys that might want to take part in a
save Sierra drive.
Now Peter, if that upsets you or you find something fraudulant in my comments I will at this time withdraw my interest or concern about Sierra Guitars and any/or all of their owner/players. No more emails nor phone calls are wanted at my residence/office asking insider information about Sierra, its officers, financial status and/or employees.
All be advised in the future such inquiries should be directed to Pete Burak.
Okay? Good Luck to you Peter in your new
endeavor. NO hard feelings on this end.
So happy that Sierra is still with us!
