Sure we all remember that great old standard.
Along with Alabamy Bound, and Alabama Jubilee
who could forget these great classic's.

I have been to Alabama one time in my life & that was to attend the funeral of my good buddy Luke Morris a friend and salesman from way back in the early days of Fender. I have not been back since.

I often go into much detail and many people take issue with the length of my posts, but
thats Ok as long as it is for a worthwhile reason and this to me is more than worth the time I spend.

Every morning I arise and go to my computer,
Its not easy being idle after all the years
I was traveling on the road with my 51 Chevy
Bel-Air convertible and a blonde by my side.
The Blonde being a beautiful Telecaster guitar. As I was youg and carefree the whole world was my oyster.

But as the years rolled by so quickly,I found
myself looking in the rear view mirror of my life, and after a few years of watching my wife go through the tough times of her health
problems,I found it difficult to imagine how
many years have passed since those days back
then.

Each day is more or less the same with me and
my wife.I look through my phone book and see who I could call and reminisce (sp)?, but many times
I find that the phone # I called was changed or dis-connected and later find that those who were my friends are gone now.

The mornings are the usual..look at whats going on with the Forum, and then look at my incoming mail to see who is writing me.

Sure I receive all the junk mail we all do.
But most of all I receive mail from sincere
friends who I think so much of.

One in particular who also shares his thoughts and prayers with me writes me every
day and helps brighten my outlook as to what
the future may hold for my wife and myself and gives me the mental lift I need.

Much of what I receive from this gentleman are humorous and down to earth things of mutual interest. Few people know that this friend played steel guitar with Marty Robbins some years back on when he toured with Marty Robbins.

He puts a smile on my face each morning and I always go back and re-read what he wrote and smile and sometimes get a laugh out of his good natured humor and spiritual guidance

My life would not be the same without e mail from this wonderful man,and although we have never met face to face and perhaps we never
will, it warms hy heart to think that someone
like this gentleman feels what I feel and lives with the same issues that I do from day to day and shares his thoughts with me.

I want to acknowledge my friend who is a Forum member and seldom posts anything, but when he does it is always something positive and not controversial. Everyone should have a friend in their lives as I do in him.

The Night Stars Fell On Alabama was the night
Bill Hamner was born.

My sincere thoughts and good wishes and prayers go out to Bill and Barbara Hamner.

They couldnt have wrote a better song and God
could not have created a better human being than my friend Bill.

God Bless Bill and Barbara Hamner. Southern
Gentleman.

A Yankee Doodle Not So Dandy edited I cant spell very good..reminisce?? (sp)Help.

Jody-That's beautiful.

I remember "Stars Fell on Alabama". I used to play it every night on the job. I still do in my music room, amazing.

When is the Book coming out? Great stories which you have a great talent for writing, as great a talent as you have had with your STEEL Guitar.

I hope You and Marilyn have a really good day.....al

Hey Jody,
Thats a nice post about a good friend and I am sure he and his wife deserve the compliments you bestow on them, but there must be lots of us out there who are wondering where the years went!
"Stars Fell on Alabama". used to be one of my favourites when I played second rhythm guitar in a dance band over here in the UK about 46 years ago! very fond memories for me
I too have made some good friends via this forum, some I may never even meet, and some I will never forget.
Keep posting, its nice to read something good!

When I read this post it reminded me of my dear friends and steel guitar heroes from Alabama.

Stars did fall on Alabama. Steel Guitar Stars here they are 4 Alabama stars:

Don Helms, Curly Chalker, Lloyd Green, Julian Tharpe.

What a Quartet?

My good friend and steel hero Zane Beck had a fabulous recording of he song. It can be heard on "A Tribute to Zane Beck."

GOD bless each of you!

Jody, You are too darned nice my friend. I hope you outlive me and can come down to deliver the eulogy at my funeral. I will be a cinch to get inside those Pearly Gates with a Jody Carver send off.
Seriously ,Jody, You know I put down my Stringmaster and walked away from a career in music to pursue a life in the Engineering field. I have been blessed with many fulfilling moments there also but I have to wonder... do I have any Engineering friends as sincere and thoughtful as you guys and gals on this forum? I don't recall any of the engineering types ever bringing tears to my lovely wife's eyes, but Jody Carver, you have a way of doing that pretty doggone often.
We love Ya, yank.

Jody, your revelations in "spot-lighting" someones accomplishments such as Bill are as "poignant" and as "Jody like" as ever, always bringing attention to others and not to yourself!

Thank you my friend for your generous spirit of encouragement toward your friends, and especially for your kind words about me and my insignificant accomplishments

May God bless you throughout the days of your life! (and this includes Marilyn, Casey, Oreo and Coco)!

Thank You Gene.

Ever since I was a youngster,I wanted to be a cowboy, especially one of those good guys that shoot straight and wore those white hats that never fell off during a bar room fight.

I admired those cowboys and, although I was never able to be a real cowboy I have always looked up to those hero's of the wild west.

There are many who still wear that white hat
and Bill and yourself are two that come to mind.

Those cowboy hero's of yesterday have been forgotten by many, but I never forgot and never will.

Keep those white hats clean Gene and you as well Bill.

Reach for the sky, I gotcha covered pardner.
Covered with Stars.

Best to both of you. And all of you cowboys.
edited to add a few more stars to couple of my Cowboy hero's.

Jody, I've never met you, but I have had the HONOR to meet Bill. I've never met his wife, but Bill truely takes a walk in The Life. He represents everything I hope to be. A devoted husband and a wonderful friend. I sure I hope to hear Bill play that PP Emmons he has told me about. I hope that if it's one of his desires to play again that he is provided that opportunity. He's talked to me about his decision to forgo music to provide for his family. Alot of us haven chosen that safer path, but I gotta feelin' that Bill has the touch to get that tone. Kind post for a deserving, humble man.

Tim, Thank you, I feel the same about Bill and Barb and thats the reason I revived this old thread. I was not aware Bill has a PP. son of a gun, he told me he played a Fender. Oh well Thanks again. Sorry I had to edit, Im very poor at spelling and that's the reason the book I'm writing is taking so long, but I'm working on it you can bet on that.

I guess everyone has secret heros! Most of us, I guess; never have or ever will meet them face-to-face! But, beyond a doubt; this Forum has done a lot to bring so many people together that otherwise would never have met! And even in addition to meeting here, many many have actually taken the next step and traveled many miles, especially to meet other Forum~Members. “Stars Fell” all over the world on the day this Forum was born! A big card of appreciation goes out to our ‘Illustrious Chief’ b0b Lee Quasar for bringing the world of Steel~Guitar and Music of all kinds together on one level playing~field for everyone to enjoy in any way they see fit! I consider Jody Carver to be ‘One Of My Best Friends’, having met because of this Forum, although we still haven't been able to arrange to meet in person yet, but; neither has the day ended! Jody; One day you'll turn around and there I'll be, l©©king over your shoulder! And I'll say, “where did you find that chord”?

Not to get off topic, but visit the www.alabamasteelguitar.com website. It's not complete, but should be within the month. The list of players under the "community" pull down bar, only reflects a sample of celebrity players (known at that time). Since that time, Lynn Owsley provided me a list of 23 celebrity level players; I'm sure some have been overlooked. That doesn't even touch all the GREAT non-celebrity level players we have. I think this makes us #1 in steel players and football.

Al Marcus, As always, THANK YOU. As for my book? You and I spent close to 2 hours on the telephone in regard to "when is my book coming out" Al, I have had much on my plate for the past 4 or so years and that has taken
my attention from completing my book on my life at Fender, but soon, I will have help from a friend of mine who has the knowledge and know how to spell and correct punctuation and grammer which I don't have.

To My good friend John Bechtel, thank you as well John, and what chord do you do you refer to? I only know (2) one is F# and the other is Gb. And yes, thank bOb Lee for allowing me to tell my stories and praise those I think so much of.

This Forum has brought me new friends and friends from my past when I was just a young fellow starting out, and for that I thank all
of you and most of all God!!!

Thank You.

Tim Bridges...Thanks for the kind words. I have enjoyed our past fellowship and look forward to the next time. Kinda gutsy of you to put down that D-10 and tackle that S-12. I was trying to keep that PP a secret from Jody in hopes I might trade him out of that beauty he has.

But since you knew The One Rose and always spoke highly of Forrest White, I'll do my best to find some for you. Bill: On a recent Public TV show, they did a special on Marty. The "Expert on music who talked on the show" said the fuzz tone on Don't Worry About Me was done on a "Broken Bass Guitar...." Then they showed a clip of the song and someone who I didn't recognize was playing in on the C neck of a Emmons PSG. Was that you ??

I have asked a lot of people who that was but none of them knew. Judging from what JC has said about you, I'd say it probably was !

I remember Alabamy Bound from the old Noel Boggs rendition and while I haven't heard your's or Al's arrangements, I'll stay with my gut and Noel with that Q-8 Fender. I saw it at a drive in theater and my girl friend thought I was stupid for getting so excited about a guitar. Oh, well !! Five wives later, I still feel the same way....

Paul,
I don't think I have seen the Public TV special you mentioned. If the steel player was playing an Emmons it wasn't me. I played a Stringmaster with my own single pedal E to A change when I played with Marty. Also,
"Don't worry about Me" came down the tube after I packed the guitar away and found a real job.
My association with Marty did have a strange twist,however...My engineering career took me into motorsports... I also got to work with Marty when he was racing stock cars. My friendship with Marty extended past both our musical and racing associations. He was a fun loving guy who truly cared for people. I haven't seen his son Ronnie in quite awhile but as Ronnie reached adulthood he was much like Marty in that respect.

Hello to all I am a brand new member to the forum but I have been looking at many of the topics for several months now trying to glean as much help as I can in trying to relearn the Hawaiian Lap Steel again. This particular topic really got my attention since Alabama is my home and when I saw the name of Luke Morris posted by Jody Carver well that really brought back some memories. I am wondering if this is the same Luke Morris that was my steel guitar teacher back in the 50's at the old Rutz Music Store (no longer in existence) in Mobile, Alabama my home town. It really struck a sad note with me because he was a really great guy and teacher. I think about him often since I just recently came back to the steel after a 44 year layoff from playing music and am now relearning the instrument and having a great time with it. Could Jody or someone confirm if this is the same Luke Morris and how long ago it has been since he passed away.
Thanks a bunch,

I have known Luke quite a while. I beleive that Luke did in fact teach steel guitar. Luke passed away in a motel while working the New Orleans area. His body was found by one of the chambermaids. Luke was with Al Hirt and his group visiting the night before.

There is a photo of Luke Morris on my website
if you look at it, it may confirm whether or not it is in fact the same Luke Morris you make reference to. Try this www.jodycarver.com if not I will try to scan a photo to you. Best to you. Okay click on to the website and then you will see a number of selections.Click on to MusicMan and scroll. If this is the Luke you remember, he was a wonderful human being and one of my dearest friends during my time with Fender as well as MusicMan. Luke passed in 1982.

Thank You.
