Yes, Darvin.....of course you're supposed to use 3 finger picks! (or none at all!) Seems like there are players who use all 4 fingers, picks or not? |

Hey Walter Thanks for posting that link..... A couple of months back when one of those "bag on Jerry Garcia" treads was starting, someone implied that Barbara Mandrell was like Jerry Garcia, less than for real with little credibility. I was disturbed by the implication because, One,I always thought Jerry Garcia was great inovator and musician that helped PSG find a new audience and identity by not using a recognizable Nashville style.I thought he was a decent player. As far as Barbara Mandrell is concerned, I saw her perform at Disneyland of So Cal in probably 1974 or 1975 and was blown away by her playing. I think she could have been a total monster on PSG if she devoted her time and attention to it like most pro players do. As it is, she is a very capable player in any situation.. JMHO |

I thought Barbara Mandrell only had two fingers, LOL, seriously though, I saw her on the Wilburn Brothers show, on RFD TV, she was older, and was smoking that steel. I gotta give it to her, the girl can play, and yes I agree that there should be more girls interested in the steel business, it would make watching a whole lot better. |

You sure that's not a ten-pedal 800? The controls look wrong for a 1000. |

Those pics bring back some memories. In 1965 I was stationed at Bien Hoa airbase Vietnam.A show "The Mandrells" appeared at the on base club where I played in the house band with my trusty Harlin Bros Multichord. When I saw this squirt blond 13 year old gonna play this big steel guitar I said, yea, right,no way.Iwas in for one wonderful surprise.Fell in love with her then, promptlytook my fingers off and threw them away. I knew she was going to do wonderful things |

Barbara took instruction from the big bear, Norman Hamlet. My good friend Jerry Hendrix has the old Fender 400 that she used. He was looking for a guitar and Norm called him and said he had a 400 that a girls father brought it in as he wanmted her to take up the sax. Jerry bought the guitar and when he set it up it had a name on the front. " Little Miss Barbara Mandrell". This all took place around Bakersfield Ca. many years ago. |
