Alan:There was a great steel player up here in Anchorage that went by the name "Chief" also a native american,He worked on the north slope,but passed away maybe a year ago? |

Alan, there was an Indian guy who played lead guitar around the Ventura County area for a good while who went by the name of "Chief Big". He was given that handle by Fred Maddox. He played a lot in the Oxnard area, most notably at the Club Vegas with Speedy Price on steel. I don't know if he played steel himself or not but it might be the same guy. I think his real name was Roy Peters, but I'm not sure....JH in Va. ------------------ |

most of the old regulars have seen these before, but some shots from the West Coast circa 1964. http://www.acetipton.net/local47.html Steel players include Blackie Taylor, Billy Tonnesson and perhaps Carl Walden. |

Vance Terry. First steel I ever heard, early 50s with Billy Jack Wills and Jimmie Rivers. A real genius and an original. I trust he has found the peace that so tragically eluded him in his last years. |

Scott, thanks for the Bobby Austin link. I played steel for Bobby at Georges Roundup (1961). George fired Bobby "because his voice was too smooth for country music". He then hired a "so called singer" who was a native american who used the name "Paul Littlechief". I was very disappointed because I loved Bobby's voice and he was a great guy to work with. My favorite Bobby Austin song was not mentioned in the obits. It is "Castle Of Love". BTW, Jason, if you are taking notes, Littlechief was later replaced with "Ronny Wheaton" (around Dec.1961) ------------------ |

Maybe somebody remembers this guy.. Dad played with Billy Jack Wills at Will's Point in Sacramento in the mid 50's and later on with Truitt Cunningham and the Red Garter Trio for a spell, and then worked with the likes of Jack Loyld who played clarinet with Bob Wills and the group.L ater on, Bud Duncan, who was mentioned earlier in this thread, Chuck and Norma Bell, the list goes on for miles... They called him big Geno, or just Geno back in those days... He played a lot on an old Fender Stringmaster and later went to a Fender 1000, a Sho Bud and on to the MSA you see in this photo... weeeeeeelll... I'm back. no-one would know this, but just before this topic ended I got PC wiped again, I've had a long going dance this year with both of my computers going down twice, in the end I had to wipe my main one, after it lost all my current emails and email drafts, some rough notes (that I'd lazily ony done as email drafts rather than word files), and everything else slipped by. Note that I've lost my email program twice in three months, once to a virus that imbedded after my original I.T. guys missed it during some routine work. nice one guys, the next was when my drive crashed. I also took some time off to help my lady set up an office-showroom workspace shopfront, we did all the shopfittings outselves. So why the big post, well even though I've been online of late, I've just not had to time to go back and catch up with everyone, I'm still catching up with everyone I missed in the downtime and working out what I had lost. (only a little, but enough to be a pain) Johnny Dee for Daugherty, I have been taking notes, and there's a few folks I'll be trying to contact. Scott, I hadn't saved your emails to my word files, so I lost all our communication, but I do have all the pics you kindly scanned and emailed, I can't recall what I might have sent you already though. Drop me a line, there were some other things I wanted to send you. I have done some other pieces for the Rockabilly Hall Of Fame, most are outdated in some respects, but still serve their purpose. Ric Epperle, I have heard of your father, there used to be a tribute website to Truitt that actually mentioned him, but I suspect it's long gone as I couldn't find anything today. phew, it's good to be back. |

Mike I will try this again. Several years ago I met A Roy Counts from Hot Springs that came from Calif; He played 6 string guitar. If it's the same guy he Passed away sometimes in the 80;s. Don't know if this helps you are not. J. Dean Mooney |

hey, don't forget the great Speedy West worked a lot out there. I first met him where he was working a shopping center grand opening with Cliffy Stone or somebody! We became friends til he passed. |

This post is in regard to an earlier one. I had an e-mail from my frind Larry Petre in Bakersfield with information about the Native American who played in the Oxnard, Ventura area back in the 60's and 70's. His last name was Flores, and he went by the name "Geronimo". Does anyone else remember him? |

I lived in Oxnard/Port Heneme from the mid 60's until 1995. The only steel player I can remember from the 60's time frame played at the Vegas Club on a ZB. Don't remember his name. |

For John Daugherty (aka Johnny Dee). Did you have a good friend, Steel and Bass player, Bobby Boydd? He and I were like brothers until he died. We used to work for Danny Michaels at the Roundup in the late sixties. ( Wasn't George Underwood a kick in the head?)) Drop me an email if you like.  |

Roy........would that have been Don Robinson? He was a great player in that time frame who played at the Crow's Nest for a good while and later at the Club Vegas..........JH in Va. ------------------ |

Jerry, I believe Speedy West,gone now for many years, played the west coast back in the fifties if not sooner. And my old teacher from Houston Texas,Herb Remington, played some gigs out there also. My dad, also named Bill Flores, played non- pedal steel in the Ventura County area in the late 40,s and the 50's. He knew Hank "Geronimo" but I don't remember if his name was Flores also.Dad played at most of the Ventura/Oxnard/Santa Paula clubs including Okies in Foster Park and Fred Maddox's "King of the Bass" club in Ventura.My dad never made the switch to pedals so by the 60's he was mostly paying Polynesian music since there is a substantial Pacific Island community in the area. I recognize some of the names mentioned in this topic but I was bit young when Dad was playing the "Western" scene.Also did anyone mention Frank Hardcastle?, steeler who played at the Carousel club in Oxnard in the late 60's.
