In case you haven't seen or heard this yet, here's the riddle: Who Played This? And here's the answer: The identity of the steeler with the "ferocious chops and impeccable inner clock" |

Moon and I thought it would be fun to see if you guys could be fooled by this old recording. I'd never heard him play like he played on Bud's Bounce and wondered if he could be detected. I'll print all this out for him so you're all invited to add your comments and best wishes. By the way, thanks to co-conspiritor, Fred Jack. Man, If I wasnt such an evil conservative, I would demand a recount, Thanks for posting that Mike, its always cool to hear a guy like Moon with such a unique style just turn it upside down. There is a live recording of Don Helms, doing Noel Boggs steelin home, that is kind of the same thing, its very swinging and, if you didnt no it was him you probably wouldnt guess it. Lee |

Lee, Ralph thought that the old cut showed a lot of his Noel Boggs influence, but it's strange that Noel's name never came up. Anyway, Moon will get a kick out of hearing from all of you. If he was into computers, he would be a lot of fun to have here on the forum. |

What guitar and tuning did he play on that recording? Was Fender making PSGs in the mid 1950's? How common was the E9 tuning back then? DZ [This message was edited by Dave Zirbel on 08 November 2006 at 06:11 AM.] |

Dave .. That would be his home made steel. The one that is now resting peacefully somewhere in the desert. Bob H. ... Speedy told me that in those years he (Moon) was the "boogie monster" around LA.on lead guitar. Moon was also a fiddler.Course if you count the different singers he worked with one might say he just couldn't keep a job. |

Fred I'm sure Speedy would know ! Mr. Bob McCollum tells me that Ralph Mooney was so good ! that he talked Ralph in to joining the union so he could get better jobs - Mc also said he was not only a grate Guitar player but a better Steeler . McCoulm is pushing 90 ! and he still wants to get together and make music . When Mc told me the story he never mentions who this guy was , He thought I would not now the name "Mooney" So ! I ask what's this guys name ? Mc has a broad history in music from So. California so I'm sure its not his imagination . Hick |

Bob H. Moon tells me about how mad Waylon used to get because so many people would always want to talk to Moon or ask if he was there so on a trip abroad,I think maybe it was Belfast, anyway Waylon says "I'll bet $50. no one will be asking about Moon on this trip. One of the group took the bet. They hadn't even stopped yet when a guy rode up on a bicycle and hollered, " is Ralph Mooney with you" ? He said Waylon was hot! |

We are working on a web page for The Moon and hope to have it soon. We have quite a bit of "stuff" he has recorded, both before and after retirement. We'll be putting pic's and clips and probably have a question and answer place. |

Man that Mooney could swing! I can just imagine the dancers hopping around the dance floor to his "inner clock". (More like an outer clock.) |
