![]() Mike, the samples are killer - I'll be sure to order a copy very soon. I can see a smile on your face playing that 800. To me, THAT is what a pedal steel should sound like. Fender had it right and nobody has touched it since. |

![]() Jim, Is there any way that players get close to that fender tone with non-Fenders? I have a 70s Sho Bud professional. ------------------ |

![]() I *think* a big part is the pickup design - the typical steel has pickups wound to about 16-20k DC resistance, while the Fenders are around 8-9.5k, more like guitar pickups. Personally, that's why I think they sound more like Jaguars and Strats than they do other pedal steels. Bob Carlucci had a pickup on his Carter rewound to a lower impedance and it made a huge difference and got close to the Fender sound, so that may be the key. The cable pulls and body/frame design are unique, but would not have such a drastic affect on tone. If I had another 10-string steel I'd probably ask Jerry Wallace to rewind it to Fender-ish impedance, say around 9 k or so and scatter-wind the thing (he did the one in my 1000 that was dead and nailed the rewind perfectly, and they are weird pickups to work with - really thin physically and tough to work on). It'd be worth a try. Or get one custom wound. Anyhow, that's my take. I'm a rookie steeler but been around guitars and pickups for decades, and I've seen/heard what specific changes in pickup design can do. And I just love the tone Mike gets out of that 800 - like Sneaky with his 400, Ralph Mooney, Early Tom Brumley. It all sounds completely different from the treble-heavy Nashville tone of today's guitars. There's a lot of treble, but a chunkiness aand midrange hump that's missing from modern guitars. |

![]() Thanks, Jim. This is good to know. Maybe I could just take out the original pickups and keep those, and put in two other pickups that are new, or customized used ones. It's hard to know exactly what to put in there because old Fender pick ups in a Bud might not sound like an old fender guitar. But you got me thinking that it can be done, maybe better with a lot of sound processing. I don't know exactly how, but I'm going to do it. I also like that old Bigsby sound that Vance Terry got with Billy Jack Wills.
