That's back there on page 2 near the top. I didn't notice that before, Rick. Very interesting. It's true what Jody said:

quote:
Steel players are very WEIRD

But weird is good. And it's also very necessary. If we were "un-weird", we wouldn't be the unique bunch that we are. While the rest of the world is fretting, we're just sliding along!

This mural was painted by school children on an overpass where Leo Fender's original factory once stood. It was done as a memorial
to Leo Fender. The likness of Dylan was a photo I took of him in 1965 at Columbia Records recording studio in Manhattan. I was asked by Don Randall and Goddard Leiberson then President of the Columbia record group to have Dylan pose with a Fender for the new upcoming catalogue.

CBS was excited over the new baby they had in Fender which CBS paid 13.5 million dollars for.

Clive Davis asked me to have a photgrapher be with me to have Dylan take a shot with a strat or whatever he wanted.

It was a cold and rainy night in Feb of 65 when I arrived at CBS studios and saw Dylan and introduced myself. He said "who care's who you are I'm not interested in you and your guitars, this is a recording studio not a photo shoot, besides I wont prostitute my self for anyone.

I addressed him as Mr. Dylan and not Bob..he walked away in disgust with a sneer on his face.

I started packing up the guitars and amps when all at once his manager Grossman said to me..hey delivery boy,go and find your self some one else to bother. This is a record session.

I was shot down UNTIL...in walks Clive Davis and Leiberson..they asked me if I was able to
have Dylan take the photo and I said No sir
Mr.Dylan doesnt feel comfortable doing so.

Leiberson said Mr.Dylan?? is that what you call him? Mister,,well we'll see about Mr. Dylan wont we Clyde, reffering to Clive Davis head of CBS Columbia records.

They all had a huddle in the control room and I couldn't hear what was happening so I kept packing the gear.

Davis and Leiberson walked out and said Jody
Mr. Dylan will NOW take the photo.

I asked Dylan what he would like to pose with and he ignored me and picked up a Jazz Bass..He didnt look at the camera or smile and he looked my way with daggers.

I thanked him and Davis and Leiberson said tell Leo Fender and Don Randall that Mr.Dylan will be in the next Fender catalogue

From that time on, people would ask me why Dylan posed with a Jazz Bass and I answered by telling them that I didnt have a P.Bass so he used the Jazz Bass instead

Back about two years ago Richard Smith told me of the mural that was painted on the overpass in Fullerton California. Richard sent the photos to me and I saw that I was sitting at the steel nect to Dylan and Jimi
Hendrix was on my right.

All day and night since then Trucks and Cars
have rolled over me and Mr.Dylan..little did
Mr.Dylan know that back in 1965 on a cold rainy night that he and I would be together forever.

Thank you Mr.Dylan but I see that your playing the wrong chord changes to Remington Ride. I have this story planned for my book so if you dont mind I am going to add my copyright to this story. It was quite an expierience, but then again so were other times like this with people like Buddy Rich and a few others.

Goodnight Mr.Dylan (Zimmerman) wherever you are. Thanks for letting me tell this abbreaveated story and not tell how he ate a pastrami sandwich with mustard dripping on his shirt and my P.Bass....I told Davis P.Bass dont stand for Pastrami Bass. Davis said dont sweat it...that manager of his is a real piece of work. I said maybe Grossman would like a "sour pickle to match his face"

Thanks......more mustard please MOM. edited...will you please pass the pickles MR.Dylan.

That's one hell of a slice of Americana Jody. So - the picture you took of Mr Dylan with the Jazz Bass - is that the one they used for the sleeve of "Like A Rolling Stone" I figure it must be, how many pics of him posing with a bass could there be? I always wondered why he posed with a bass . .

That's not the first story I've ever heard of Bob behaving that way. Not nice. But there you are - up there in the center of the mural, flanked by those other guys. It's kind of poetic justice . .

And your book will be coming out soon - I'll need 2 copies - one to dog-ear the pages and one to keep mint. And you know Ron will buy one! The title alone is an attention grabber . . I predict it will be a big seller, especially once the word gets around what it's really about. I bet it'll shake a few trees.

The title alone is an attention grabber ..you bet and it's something that happened that I will never forget. I still get a lump in my throat just thinking of it.

I'm trying hard to get the incentive to get this done..Its not for the money beleive me
I just want to do it for the memories it brings back to me. As I write each page, Its
like being back in that time.

The title is something I had not planned on
but it was something special to me and to someone else.

Have a Goodnight I have to iron my tweed pajamas. I dont mind the itch from the tweed its those amp corners that irritate my..
Goodnight.

One time I actually fell asleep on my 57 T8. Woke up with lines on my face that took hours to go away!

We're probably safe as long as we stay away from politics, religion, and you-know-who. Anyway, this is educational - for me, anyway!

Wow, now that's a great photo's of Jody's Quad...and the group too!!! I got couple of group Pro photos with my Stingmaster D6, circa: 1963. I'd send them in, but my family and the cat would disown me.

First thing you notice, with a lotta photos of Stringmaster players (of yesteryear and today), they are in the standing position (my preference in public, not at home). That's a nice option. Then you notice the haircut's (yesteryear & pre-Beatle era), no need to go there.

Jody, that's some situation you experienced with Dylan. You handled it like the Fender PRO you are. We all run into "snodgrass patches in the lawn of life" every now and then. It's how you handle it that counts. Maybe Dylan had a "bad day", I reckon with that attitude, he had/has many years of "bad days".

You got a ton of experience's (good & bad) to regale us with, so please keep at that book. Who know's, maybe you'll wind up on "60 minutes". That's not good, take's me 3 hours to watch 60 minutes.... Just kiddin....I'll try Dennis today, see if he's back. Let u know!!

I'd sure like to see a picture of Rick's Stingmaster T8 face......Man, now that dedication!!! Or a fifteen pound Margarita!!!! Have a great day!! TX

Ron

Rick,

The only redeeming value of these old band photo's (Kreigsman's Photo Studio's in NYC did the best they could with us) is the subject of this thread (The Stringmaster). Anyway, I'll negotiate with the real ruler of our household (The Cat).

Jody, Dennis came down with Pneumonia. He'll be out a little while longer. They conveyed that he'll be alright. I asked his staff to pass on your hello and nice comments when he calls in.

I showed some folk's the pictures of the mural, at the overpass, that Rick kindly posted for you. Their reaction was just pure astonishment!!! When they heard about your writing a book, I got a ton of question's, when, where, how? So stay with it.....

Rick is trying to figure out how to box that Florida weather and send it up to us folks up here. Hope the aligator's don't get him.... Later, TX

Ron
