I just received a call from the mother of my dear friend and fellow steel player Jackie Thompson, (who can no longer speak)and who is gravely ill. Someone has just broken into his home and stole his burgandy Fessendon double 11 string with 9 pedals and 7 knee levers. He believes the serial number to be 33. Should anyone see this guitar I would greatly appreciate your contacting me and I will get word to him and his family who are all very distrought and going through VERY difficult times. Any prayers you could send their way would also be greatly appreciated.....Thank you! |

I have just talked to my great friend Jerry Fessenden as well as Jackies mother, and the guitar has been located in a pawn shop in Dallas. The police have also identified the person and are going to prosecute. Unfortunately his mother has been told the guitar had been hocked for $400.00, which means that amount will have to be paid before the guitar will be released, then additional charges may be filed against the thief to get the $400.00 back. The only other option is to wait for trial, which the police say could take up to two years, and that could be a lifetime to Jackie. Jackie desperately needs help in getting his guitar back so he can enjoy his remaining time. My dear friend Jerry Fessenden and I are both immediately putting a check in the mail to help out, not only a fellow steeler, but a kind, dignified and gentle man who is most certainly in terrible need. Anyone who wishes to help someone who truly deserves help, who is "one of us" in our elite steel guitar community/fraternity, may send their donation to: Jackie Thompson |

My check is in the mail too. Jerry Fessenden told me tonight that Jackie's dad loaned him the $400 to retrieve the guitar, so now we can help get his dad paid back. |

It should not cost a penny to get a stolen instrument out of a pawn shop. It is an illegal transaction for the pawn shop owner to buy this guitar. HE is the one who loses NOT the original owner. I just had this happen in the Atlanta area. The pawn shop owner lost the money he paid for the guitar I had stolen NOT me. Just file a police report and verify the instrument and it should cost nothing to get it back. |

The way Jerry explained it to me was that if the pawnshop wasn't paid, the guitar would be taken to the police station as evidence until the case was resolved, which could be several months. At that time he would get the guitar back at no charge. By doing it this way, Jackie got his guitar back today and the $400 will be added to the judgment against the perpetrator. |

The police should have confiscated the guitar from the pawn shop as evidence. The pawn shop owner is out the money but is possible he can recoup it during the prosecution of suspect(s) involved in the initial theft and sellling stolen property. A judge could force restitution be made at any rate. Glad Jackie got his guitar back! Hopefully they'll charge it out as burglary, theft/possession of stolen property and any other appropriate charges. |

Bill H....Thank you for your comment. I believe some of the laws of your state and the state of Texas could be different. That which I have relayed from Jackies parents within this thread, is exactly what they were told by the Dallas police department. Special thanks to Milton Willman for his interest and valuable input based on his considerable experience. |

Regardless as to whether the $400.00 should have been paid or not, I feel there is nothing wrong with sending some money. Our fellow forumite steel player is in a bad way and probably has 100 places he could spend some extra money. I am glad to send a small amount to help out and a bunch of small checks would certainly add up enough to do some good. Let's do it. Jerry Roller |

I received a very nice hand-written thank you letter from Jackie, his mom, and dad yesterday. For future reference, his last name is Thomson (no 'p'). Hopefully they are able to cash the checks with either spelling. |

My french check would be of no use to him, but if anyone I know who has PayPal can e-mail me, I will send $10 to them to forward. Since it's Reece asking, I know this is an approptiate situation to do this. animatic@fr.oleane.com |

John H....There is not a picture of the guitar anywhere to my knowledge. I too received a very nice letter from Jackie and his mother and father. I have also had two very nice phone conversations in which she asked me to thank everyone from the bottom of their hearts for being so kind. In addition to our helping the Thomsons financially, I believe it would be wonderful if some would take the time to write Jackie a cheerful letter and just say hello, possibly without expecting a response, although it would surely be appreciated and very meaningful to him. At times like this I'm especially happy to be part of such a wonderful and giving steel guitar community. |
