I have opened “Steel Guitars of North County” in my hometown. The address is 3375 Mission Ave. Suite D, Oceanside, Calif., 92054 and the usual suspects will be honored- teaching, repair, sales, etc. The official “Grand Opening” will be Saturday, April 16. Friends have come out of the woodwork in support of this project and, to that end, Maurice Anderson, Jay Dee Maness, and David Wright have graciously consented to host “Steel Guitars in Concert” that evening following the opening from 7PM-10PM. I’ll throw together a band to support them and there will be a $20 donation- all proceeds going to the musicians and the room. The location will be near the shop although the exact location is currently up in the air, depending on the number of folks who would like to come.
Reece has also consented to teach while he is here! He will be giving private lessons on Friday, April 15 from 9AM-noon and a 4-hour class from 1PM-5PM that will hopefully be limited to around 10 participants in the afternoon as there is a physical space consideration. The basic lesson for the class will be as follows (in Reece’s words): “The teaching approach would first be to answer questions...then to review all playing procedures, then explain the six simple formulas that will allow each one to know multiple positions on their guitar so they can play chords while using the formulas as a method of instant identification and recognition relative to positioning.”
Headphone amps will be provided. The fee for the private lessons will be $50/hour and the class will be $75 for the 4-hour session. If enough interest is generated Reece may consent to doing some private lessons on Thursday, April 14 as well. This is a fantastic opportunity to take lessons from a legend without having to make the trek to Texas for us players on the “Left Coast”.
Speaking of legends, Jay Dee Maness has consented to giving lessons in late May as well at the new store!!! Please e-mail me stlgitr@sbcglobal.net with your interests -class or private with Reece in April or Jay Dee in late May as well as indicating if you'd like to attend the Saturday evening venue. I’ll be able to follow-up with you as things firm up.

Well, if you can't find any big names to help you out I guess these guys will do. You've been caring for strays for some time now from what I hear.

Seriously, I wish you the best with your new venture. What a tremendous opportunity for SoCal steelers.

Thanks, guys, for the encouragement. This is really a labor of love for the instrument and its history and my hope is that folks with similar interests stop by and just play. I have a PA setup and a bass, guitar, fiddle, and drums setup for impromptu jams. The steel community is such a cool one that guys like Reece, JayDee, and David all said- "I want to be there for the grand opening". I ask you- who, in their right mind, could possibly turn that down?

The grand opening of Jim's place will be a fantastic asset to us here in the west coast. I'm both honored and excited to be a part of the festivities. Playing with Jay Dee and Maurice is always a thrill and an honor. Also, don't miss Maurice's class on the 15th!! It will be very beneficial to anyone and I will personally be attending this class. Trust me, you won't be disappointed. My hat goes off to Jim and all of his efforts to put this together. It has been no small task and a big congrats goes out to him for all of his hard work! See you all on the 15 & 16th. It's going to be a great time! just a note on Maurices class, it doesn't matter what level your playing is, he can give you great insight on where your at., I have found that everytime I sit down with him, I have so much more to learn...so...if you have the chance.... come be with us!!!!!

Jim-I want to congratulate you on your opening. The west coast will welcome you.

What a treat that Reece, Jaydee and David have consented to appear.

It would be worth $50. an hour to have a private lesson from Reece.

He could show you how to apply a whole set of new principles to your playing.......al

I'm looking forward to making the trip and having the opportunity to be with a lot of great friends, make new friends, and meet many whom I've been corresponding with for years, but never had the pleasure of meeting.

Having the opportunity of playing with my dear friends JayDee and David will be an honor for me. I'm the biggest fan each of them have.

Lastly I want to thank my dear friend Jim Palenscar for making all this possible. Knowing him as I do, I have no doubt "Steel Guitars Of North County" will be a first class and personable place which will help many steel players.

I'm both proud and excited to be a part of the grand opening, and I look forward to meeting every one there.

Wow! Thanks for all the kind words of encouragement. The thought of having these great players even drive by my new shop is so humbling, much less having them come to play! I am really enjoying the process of putting all of this together and openly invite anyone to stop by. Rick Schmidt came by yesterday and hung out for the afternoon while I was putting stuff together (thanks for the help Rick) and left his double 12 Dekley for me to go thru although I did detect a slight raise in his eyebrows when the first thing I reached for was a hammer . Fortunately it was for assembling the storage rack I just received and the Dekley, for the moment, was spared. While he was there we were noodling with some of the guitars and ran across a couple of way-cool changes and licks that neither of us had ever heard before and there were a few "A-HA" moments which is exactly what I was hoping would happen with this type of venture. So- thanks again Rick and I would encourage anyone who is ever in the area to just drop by.

You're right Bill - these guys are fanatics
~ we wish you were back out here too! Come on down~ the water is, well~~ wet right now.
You know the best thing about being a former vet (guess I'll always be one)~ I never have to put another animal to sleep (I know there are times when it is necessary- Lord knows- after 30 years of it)- it's just that it took its toll~~ and the worst I can do in the music world is lose my place and laugh at myself (a common occurance)~ onward~

Jim...I had a great time hanging out in Steelguitarland! Thanks for the lift!

You probably will need that hammer to fix some of the self-inflicted things I've done to that poor old Dekley.

Can't wait for the Grand Opening!

I just want to encourage all you steelers out west who have ever considered taking lessons to not miss this opportunity. Reece is as good a teacher as there is and he can teach on any level!!

You will leave wondering why you didn't do it sooner!! He will take years off the learning curve!!

Keep an eye on the bald headed bricklayer too...you'll pick up some stuff from him, I guarantee it!!!

OK John I've got you down. We've worked a deal with Best Western Marty's Valley Inn 3240 East Mission Avenue, Oceanside (760)757-7700. I spoke with the manager (Oscar)and he offered a for single for $61 and a double for $71. You have to mention it's for Steel Guitars of North County to get the deal.

The show is on for the evening of the Grand Opening on the following Saturday - April 16th) from 7-10 and is filling up quickly so those of you who would still like to attend please let me know @ stlgitr@sbcglobal.net . David, Reece, and Jay Dee will be performing in the conference room at Marty's Valley Inn (info above) on Sat nite, April 16th from 7-10PM for those of you wanting to attend just the concert. Again the cost is $20 and the proceeds go entirely to the musicians and the hotel as this is strictly a labor of love for me.
