Well it looks like Ron Lashley Jr. is finnaly gonna do it. Announced this past weekend at the convention in St. Louis. The Emmons Guitar Company by Lashley Inc. will go back to building Push/Pull guitars on a limited production basis. Ron Jr. brought a brand new laquer S-10 P/P to St. Louis to see what the response would be like. I'm here to tell you guys, it went over WELL! People were hovering over that guitar like flys at a picnic lunch.
This guitar was "Forrest Green, Laquer", 3x4, aluminum neck, legrande style pedals, with grover machine tuners. Ron Jr. still has all the original casting molds and will be able to make the old style Emmons pedals, endcasts & even 12 string aluminum necks if market demand is there.
NOTE: All new Emmons P/P's will have to be custom ordered. Here's a picture of the one we got to demo.

You can bet my order is going in for a new D-10. I think I want that same pretty Blue Laquer Finish Ricky Davis had on his "Blue Darlin" Faulawka. Oh Man! I just can't sleep from thinking about it. Nick

Did anyone think Charlton's guitar (and his right hand) sounded like a P/P?

Good news.I think it will sound like a P/P 'cause they've got the drawings and all the old casting molds. The only thing that i would change might be the cabinet.A different choice of wood for example."Alerce" would be a great choice.I am building a D-10 right now and i can recommend this kind of wood.

Dennis, it might help that Buddy has a rare bolt on changer in his Zum. It also might help that his tone is just so good that maybe we subconsciously associate it with what's agreed to be the best sound. I've been lucky enough to play with Buddy a couple of times and I've royally screwed up a couple of tunes cause I was too busy listening to him to pay attention to what I was supposed to be doing!!

If the P/P tone is the standard to most players, I thought the Zum that Charlton was playing had it nailed. Whatever Bruce did to that guitar, (other than BC's right hand), must be the major "top secret" item(s) incorporated to get "that" tone.

I would love to see Emmons company making PP guitars again.I would love to see even more steel companies making PP guitars.Wouldn`t be great if you could order a Zum push pull? Or Mullen? How about Anapeg push pull (probably would be around 15K and 10 years waiting period to get one tho)?I say, more push pulls ,no matter who bilt them.

When I stopped by to say hi to Ron Jr he told me that he found enough parts to complete 1/S10 guitar, the one which he brought to the show.

Nick is correct. I had several long conversations with Ron Jr and Rebecca at the convention. They are testing the market for interest in the classic Emmons p/p and YES, they are strongly considering building the great sounding Emmons p/p again that many of us love for the tone.

Ron found a number of old steel guitar bodies stored in the factory basement and in fact the single body p/p that he had at the show was from the mid 80's. It sounded very good. I believe it sold at the show!

There are still many great Emmons p/p players especially here in TX. Incredible players such as Bobby Flores, Rick Price, Dickey Overby, Bobby Bowman and many more play Emmons p/p's.

Larry Sasser's p/p and Dicky Overby's p/p's sounded great at the show and of course Jay Dee Manness -- although he did not play at the show -- always sounds incredible on his p/p.

Needless to say, this is in addition to their present all/pull Emmons. They appear to have a new strategy to accelerate the sales/fulfillment of the Emmons Steel Guitar...I wish them well as I do all the wonderful steel guitar builders.

I'm glad they're making a new Emmons P/P.

I've heard Buddy C. play an Emmons, a Zum & a GFI Ultra. They all sounded like a P/P when he played them. Must be in his hands

I checked out the NEW Emmons PP Ron built. Beautiful guitar that played and sounded great. And yes, it looks like they will be building them again on a production basis if the interest is there.

This is exciting news on the face of it, but I can't help wondering if there aren't just the right number of P/Ps out there already.

They're not for everybody, after all and, despite what some people claim, it's only the very early ones that make the large sums of money. '70s/'80s examples come up for sale reasonably frequently, and they don't always sell fast.

Time will tell, I suppose, but I would like a black one with a stick-on decal !

Seems to me there may be some who might not wish to see this happen. It could put a dent in the "restored" 60's push-pull market and possibly devalue some of those prized 60's horns. If I could get a new push-pull that sounds like an "original" for $4-5K (assuming this is a likely price range and that they would have "that sound"), why would I want to pay $3-6K for a 60's "original". What I hear most people saying on the forum is it's "that sound" they're looking for, not necessarily the collectability. I do understand the "nostalgia" factor, but if I could get a brand new one for the same or less than an "original"... I'd go with a new one. Just some observations...

Respectfully,

The most valued... in terms of bucks and collectability... are the 64-65 wraparounds and the 66-67 bolt-ons, with the 68-69 cuttail horns coming in third place. Unless Ron started making bolt-ons or wraparounds, I don't believe the vintage market would be hurt by a new Emmons PP.

As with everything, condition, condition, condition is the key to older guitars' value.

There are so many 70's and 80's PP's floating around out there and available in the $2k range that I don't think a new PP would be viable market-wise. Just MHO.

A respected player I talked to who tried the S10 in St.Louis said that it was a pretty darn good sounding guitar, but not the best Emmons he'd heard. Which reflects my feelings as well.

I don't believe that will happen. I would expect new PPs will have to sell for more than the current All Pulls, because they are more complex to make.

You can purchase an original, perfectly set-up PP, for much less. I'd go with the original. Another factor is I like to try before I buy, not order and wait.

I'm not talking about the few rare PPs that are $5K and up, that's a seperate vintage market. I talking about the D10s that sell in the $3K range.

More factory push pulls? Yea right! There were enough parts to build one old/used one. Only one.
Actually, I was talking to Bryan Adams and we agreed that he, myself and Charlie Ward have enough parts to build many new/used P-P guitars in the future. Anybody want one? All genuine factory parts from yesteryear.
Just kidding, because the value of the parts is more valuable than the "parts" would be as a "whole steel guitar".

So, to sum up:
- Emmons push pulls can't make a comeback, 'cause they never went away in the first place.
- Nick remains an unapologetic Emmons fanatic.
- Since the publication of the pictures of Nick's music room, the supplier of that wood panelling has decided to launch a vintage reissue of mactac walnut. The IPO is expected next Thursday.

Like Darvin said: Both! I have a '77 D10 (blonde lacquer) and an '81 S12 (universal in rosewood mica). I sold my first Emmons push pull in 1993 and went 10 years without owning one. Now, I've got two and I'm keepin' 'em!!!

Keep on pickin'!

I recently (last week) had a good expierience with the Emmons Co.
I needed some half-tone tuners for my Push-Pull, and mistakenly bought some LeGrande half tone tuners.
I sent them to Emmons and they drilled them out to the correct size, and got them back to me within 1 week.
They work/fit perfectly.
Thanks, Emmons Co.!
