I've been seeing a few Fender pedal steels on Ebay in colors other than what I belive they came in from the factory. I thought that the early 400's only came in the white/Mary Kay finish, but check out this one in baby blue: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7360406951 Also, this 1000 in red: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7359641236 These are nice looking, but are these factory finishes?[This message was edited by b0b on 25 October 2005 at 01:28 PM.] |

Early ones were blond, and the later ('63 and up) were sunburst. That's it. Fender never offered "custom" finishes on their pedal steels. |

From an original 1966-67 Fender catalog:Fender 800 and 2000- "Both are available in Sunburst or Custom finishes at no extra charge." Fender 1000 and 400- "The Fender 1000 and 400 in Sunburst or Custom finishes without charge, are the most advanced pedal guitars on the market today." There's also a pic of a very cool Pedal 800, single 10, in red, as well as a sunburst Pedal 1000, a white Stringmaster, and a black,3 legged Deluxe 8. |

Jody is our resident "expert" at things Fender, especially from that period. See what he says here... http://steelguitarforum.com/Forum5/HTML/008537.html I have many Fender catalogs and brochures. Mine all say "Sunburst finish only". Skip, could you post a scan of that catalog page you have? |

Skip, thanks for that picture (you're a real troublemaker! )I've never seen a (factory-finish) candy-apple red Fender pedal steel...up until now, that is. But, there it is...big as life. Click here I'm real interested in hearing what Jody has to say, too! I also have some of the old catalogs, and it appears that the same custom (Duco) finishes that were available on standard guitars were just as available on steels. I've askeed a couple guys who used to work the Custom shop, who have looked at old records, and also bugged a few Fender Execs I know for info - and it's perfectly possible for any of the 4 cable-pull steel models to be found in any Fender custom color color. What Fender didn't do is keep very good track of sales of custom-color items, so the only way to verify is to have the guitar gone over by a vintage specialist in *guitars* - those are the guys that know the finishes, electronics, and things that are dead giveaways as to non-originality in those areas. Example - Gruhn isn't known as a steel expert, but he could spot a refinish from 20 yards, even on a steel. Some of the ones showing up are plainly refins. Missing decals and plates, wrong colors (the Duco auto finishes were the "custom colors"), sloppy coatings work, old finishes in control cavities - those are all quick indicators. My 1000 is a weird case - it's a blondie, but missing a decal and plate, plus the frame seems to have been repainted...but not the body. |

My personal early 400 is the 'tele' Ivory colour. Any newer Fender cable guitars that I have seen have all been sunburst, with the exception of a friend in Lethbridge, Alberta who has the medium blue 800, which is the original colour. It surprised me. The Fender/Sho-bud's were either in black or walnut. Al Brisco Steel Guitars of Canada |

This blue Fender I may be responsible for, Many many years ago it had a young owner named Bobby Moore I believe, he came into my store when I was in Norfolk VA. at "The Guitar Shoppe" on Harold street He wanted this guitar a light blue color and paid me well to refinish it. I'd bet this is the same guitar. It looks identical. Bobbe |
