Did you ever do a search here for something you know you've seen, but can't find now?It happens to me a lot. We can all help prevent this in the future by properly naming our threads. Here's a perfect example: http://steelguitarforum.com/Forum11/HTML/003758.html An SM57 mike was broken, and wiring info was requested/given. The thread was named SM57. Perfect! If someone wants to search for this info in two years, I'll bet they find it first try! Too often, posts have names like Question or Help, making them hard to find in future searches. While I'm on my SoapBox, let me also point out that the response "I sent the info by email" helps no one but the original poster. Thanks.[This message was edited by Joey Ace on 06 May 2003 at 12:40 PM.] |

Amen to all that Joey.. I do alot of research when I can or need to....and it is quite a hassel to look and look...especially just doing "match words"...because folks aren't explicit enough in their titles....and nobody learns from that>> and nobody learns from "I answered him in e-mail"... I want to learn...and my students want to learn....and we can't do it with that going on....yeee haaa. Ricky |

We don't have "rules" about such things, but vague titles can be annoying. Like in Buy and Sell, some people use "For Sale" as a title. It's annoying to have to download a page just to discover that's it's something you have no interest in. What's worse is that you don't remember it the next time, and you end up downloading the page again.------------------

I suspect most of the "offenders" honestly don't realize they are causing confusion.I hope this post will make them "see the light". |

Consider yourself the Reporter writing a headline for your news article. Well, everywhere except the Humor section - the more vague, the better!!! example: Wives vs. Guitars as opposed to Men Debate Necessity of Women when Guitars are Option. |

Donna, I'm not sure what you're talking about but us men folk will take a two-necked, four-legged guitar everytime compared to a woman with the same |

Donna,It depends entirely on the woman. In Tommy's case there is no question of the option. I am confident he realizes the gem he is blessed with. That Zum is gorgeous. But its beauty is ONLY on the surface. carl |

No problem, Terry. Welcome to the Forum. This is something that occurs often, even by Forum Veterans, and always bugs me. You will get better responses if you title your post something like "Anybody Know (name here)" or something similar. It helps in future searches too. Correcting all of them would be a full time job. AT LEAST YOU DID NOT MAKE THE NEWBIE MISTAKE OF USING ALL CAPS. PS. I just saw another mis-titled post. It was about classic Eddy Arnold / Little Roy recordings, but you'd never know by the title.

1.Why can't we edit post titles? 2.Can we request that the moderator edit the title for us? If I start a new subject post with a typo in the title, it drives me crazy! |

good question, Tony. Maybe we'll hear from b0b or Joey on this. If it's in the Humor section, (unless I hear otherwise)you can contact me for spelling edits to your posts!Carl D - Thank you! You are a sweet man, and I appreciate your comment!! donna |

Yep, good questions. Here's the answers: 1. It's a limitation of the software. 2. Yes. b0b and I can, but it's not as easy as editing a post, so we don't it very often. Since it's time consuming we don't encourage requests for minor reasons. |

I thought moderators could edit, but I was wrong. We actually canNOT edit titles. I heard the Steel Guitar Forum once had a spell-check option, but it crashed when some of the Aussies tried to use it! b0b or Joey, can you confirm this????

I'm with you on this thread. Many times I've seen thread titles such as, "Read This", "Wow", "Help!", "Who Played This?", and so forth. A bit ambiguous. I'll admit, when someone is originating a post, it can take some real thought to come up with a succinct, concise title that lets people know what they're getting into before they click on the thread's link, but I believe it's worth it. I myself certainly try (however often I succeed is another question!) to give good and descriptive titles to any thread I initiate. But then, the question may boil down to something akin to folks using a spell checker when posting....we don't necessarily expect perfection in spelling and syntax, so some might assert that titles for threads should be allowed the same relaxed latitude. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so y'all know what I'd prefer. ------------------ Bill, steelin' since '99 | Steel page | My music | Steelers' birthdays | Over 50?[This message was edited by Bill Llewellyn on 21 September 2004 at 10:06 PM.] |

I agree Bill. My spelling is pretty bad, and my typing is the same. I ofter leave typos, after posting, in because I don't have the time to edit.We never close threads because of poor titles. Never even considered it. My comments are just to point out that it will be better for the reader AND poster if titles were descriptive, especially in future searches. |
