"Believe", was the pandora's box. I hear many electronic pop songs where this is used on 100% of the vocal as an effect, including the vibrato. In the 80s and 90s electronic music (in it's various forms)contained driving emotion, powerful analog synth tones, often scary. Now it just sounds like cheese wiz.

There ARE still some really talented singers in the world - some of them are even pretty, too. I have heard Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Martina McBride and Shania Twain all blow down the barn in un-fakeable live situations. I think it's a quite recent phenomonen (7 years?) to try to make stars out of boys with pecs and eyelashes, and girls with, um, attributes, who can't sing at all. I guess now with lip-synched concerts (and all the fireworks going off), you no longer need to be able to sing live either.
