Although the sympathy vote the gals are getting is nice... it's like Wildman Larry Fisher or the G.T.O's, you like that crazy not quite competent thang... or you don't.

Worst Band Ever?
Def Leppard are about 40 times more crap than the Shaggs, Hootie & The Blowfish are ten times crappier.

Well, music is subjective that's for sure. People have their favorite bands, and they may hate other bands. But the Shaggs... this music is in a class all it's own! It from another Planet. No rhythm, no meter, iffy pitch, out of tune guitars, no consistent verse or chorus structure. If Bad means musically bad... it doesn't get any worse than the Shaggs. If Bad means a professional recording band with hit records that you really don't like... well that's something different.

The Shaggs are musically bad, but I hear a lot of Goodness in there!

There was a story on The Shaggs in the New Yorker awhile back. Dad was a tyrant. The jokes on them and they know it. Having said that I'll join in on the yuks, too.

Philosphy of the World

LYRICS:

Philosophy Of The World

Oh, the rich people want what the poor people's got
And the poor people want what the rich people's got
And the skinny people want what the fat people's got
And the fat people want what the skinny people's got

You can never please anybody in this world

The short people want what the tall people's got
And the tall people want what the short people's got
The little kids want what the big kid's got
And the big kids want what the little kid's got

You can never please anybody in this world

Oh, the girls with short hair want long hair
And the girls with long hair want short hair
Oh, the boys with cars want motorcycles
And the boys with motorcycles want cars

You can never please anybody in this world

It doesn't matter what you do
It doesn't matter what you say
There will always be
One who wants things the opposite way

It doesn't matter where you go
It doesn't matter who you see
There will always be
Someone who disagrees

We do our best
We try to please
But we're like the rest
Whenever at ease

Oh, the rich people want what the poor people's got
And the poor people want what the rich people's got
And the skinny people want what the fat people's got
And the fat people want what the skinny people's got

You can never please anybody in this world

Things I Wonder:

Things I Wonder

LYRICS:

Things I Wonder

There are many things I wonder
There are many things I don't
It seems as though the things I wonder most
Are the things I never find out

I wonder about the stars above
I wonder about the birds that fly
I wonder about your love
But most of all I wonder why you make me cry

I wonder, I wonder
I wonder why we have to say goodbye
There are some things I don't understand
There are some things I do

But one thing I don't understand
Is why we have to be so blue
I understand why you feel the way you do
Because I feel the same way too

I wonder why our minds drift astray
I wonder why life goes on this way
I wonder why we have to part
We both know it'll break our heart

There are many things I wonder
There are many things I don't
I'll be glad when I find all these things out
But until I do things won't change with me and you

With me and you things will stay the same
With me and you things won't change
With me and you things will be the same

My Pal Foot Foot

LYRICS:

My Pal Foot Foot

My pal's name is Foot Foot (Foot Foot)
He always likes to roam
My pal's name is Foot Foot (Foot Foot)
I never find him home

I go to his house
Knock at his door
People come out and say
Foot Foot don't live here no more

My pal Foot Foot (Foot Foot)
Always likes to roam
My pal Foot Foot (Foot Foot)
Now he has no home

Where will Foot Foot go
What will Foot Foot do
Oh, Foot Foot
I wish I could find you

I've looked here, I've looked there
I've looked everywhere
Oh, Foot Foot
Why can't I find you?

Foot Foot, where can you be?
Foot Foot, why won't you answer me?
Foot Foot, Oh Foot Foot
Wherever you are
I want you to come home with me

I don't have time to roam
I have things to do
I have to go home
Oh, Foot Foot, where are you?

If Foot Foot didn't like to roam so well
He would still have a place to dwell
Foot Foot, please answer me
I know where you are
You're behind that tree

Foot Foot, please come to me
Foot Foot, now that you're here
Won't you come home
Foot Foot, promise me this
That you will never again roam

Hey folks,

I live about 15 mikes from Fremont, NH and its on my way to Chester, NH wehere I rehearse with one of my bands. Maybe I should see if they're still at it and need a steel player. Judging from what I've heard, I'm just the man for the job. Finally a band that understands my sense of tuning and timing .

As a big fan of NRBQ, there something perfectly understandable about their interest in the Shaggs: I say this with a completely straight face.

Finally: this was a desperately needed antidote to the 45 minutes I spent reading the thread on the SGHOF over in the Players forum. Thanks Doug!!!

A good example of "heart" vs. technique (or lack thereof), eh?

I guess we shouldn't underestimate the William Hung phenomenon.

By the way, Mike, they're called "cankles". You don't know where the calf ends and the ankle begins.

lossa heart, very goofy messed up heart, but heart.

I find most mainstream well produced records to be soul destroying windows into mediocrity, that's a yawning abyss of tedium where ever strictly adhered to tempo is like a razor cutting a small piece out of my sanity.
Phil Collins, Shania Twain, Def Leppard and that Hootie band are without a doubt the easy-listening muzak of my own personal hell dimension.

I love watching people's faces when I play the Shaggs CD for them.

I've heard "professional" bands, in tune and in time, make much worse music IMHO. The world has enough Velveeta-at least MY world does...the Shaggs are unpasturized, unfiltered, and at least as good as Ynqwie

And it's like..."Who cares?"

Well, that is one of the sentiments.

But what I find really amazing about this thread, is that some of our more musically schooled brothers have expressed kind of my sentiment[s].

And of course, I am far from being formally musically trained, myself.

I mean, why should we enjoy pouncing on these, innocent, and [come to find out], very manipulated and controlled kids?

I didn't pay much attention to this thread, at first, but as things moved on, with all the ridicule etc., I just had to say to myself, "I don't know, something just doesn't seem right, here."

This whole odyssey is really incredible.

Think about it.

I read that article about them (one of this threads links) - Amazing.

This, to me, is where legends, and folklore are born. The Shaggs story is just ripe for some kind of song or novel or movie or documentary.

The fact that most of the original cast are still around, 30 years later or so, should prompt someone, more capable than me, to get this ball rolling.

You're right Chip, it's an amazing story and it's kind of sad. These kids were forced to quit school, forced to practice, and forced to record an album. Imagine being famous for the rest of your life for recording the worst rock album of all time! No wonder one of the women (the drummer) suffers from depression.

On the positive side... a lot of people are inspired by the energy and the youthful optimism in their music and lyrics.

How many garage bands would have given up their first born child to achieve the limited exposure of the Shaggs?

Worst band ever?.....I think the statistics are flawed or incomplete!

I can still enjoy watching Ed Wood movies.
They are so bad thay have a definite charm.

I also lived near Fremont, Dan B-M just reminded me.
I lived in Barnstead NH for a time,
and have 200+ years of roots there.
My sister still has a vacation house,
and I have 20 acres, right ova Duram Ridge from Dan's.

I can sorta see this father,
as not being all that odd up there abouts,
the odd part is his picking MUSIC
for the "big break out for the family".

I can bet he tried to book them down
at the Circle 9 ranch in Epsom too.
I can just see the house booking agent
spinning that disk the 1st time!

Sure, sure Mr, we play country,
heck we LIVE in the country!

The really sad thing is that it appears that they'll never live that stuff down, no matter how good they get now. I wasn't their fault it sounds that way, as they just happened to be forced to do that album at a time in their playing lives that no one should have to record.

Their father... Deaf? Without taste? No, I can't seem to chock this one up to anything but him being somewhat crazy - even economic desparation won't cut it in my book.

No sane person is going to actually think that stuff is good enough to make it anywhere, let alone lay the money down to try and prove it. All they'll prove is that they actually believe it themselves, and to me that spells one thing: craziness.

Doug,

Is that pic of Mr & Mrs Wiggins really THEM?

Remember "THEM"? Predatory, unstoppable, mandible-laden, stop-at-nothing-to-satiate- conquest, pesky, maniacal, voracious giant tyrants of destruction, mayhem, and control?

I remember THEM.

I suspect she just supported her daughters.

And probably feared her husband to some extent.
Or at least was an old school subservient wife.
No say in the matter.

Either that, she just was sweet and clueless.
Ok dear, have fun with the kids and the family budget.
