Well there is some fine Rock n Roll sax playing
that is more blues oriented than jazz.

1 4 5 changes and pentatonic scales,
not so jazz like, but driving just the same.

I would very much hesitiate to say that;
David Gilmor, John Paul Jones or David Linely's
steel playing makes their music sound more country.

I think the reason a lot of people have trouble with this topic is because of people like Sonny Rollins and everything he represents. Nice article in the New York Times today: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/21/arts/music/21son n.html?_r=1&adxnnl=1&oref=slogin&adxnnlx=1161430139-1HPiEaWoEdZAtGRDEpQ0tg

And exerpts of his new album, Sonny, Please, can be heard on Sonnyrollins.com. For many of us Sonny represents everything great and wonderful about Jazz. It is that type of exploration and dedication that I feel represents the true jazz artists. For me, the term "Smooth Jazz" represents the opposite of that - the opposite of everything Mr. Rollins has upheld.

Yeah Bill thanks,
Dang, those excerpts sound great!
Yes "real jazz" if there ever is
a definition for it.

The second horn is so much different than
the sax, and yet intune with it.

I did an album of mostly improvised music
in NYC with Tommy Cambell one of Sonny's alumni on drums.
The cat was just all over the ranch on it.

It also had Joe Locke on vibes / vibe synth,
and 2 of my friends Alan Donson on guitar
and Glen Fripp on piano.
