Well there is some fine Rock n Roll sax playing that is more blues oriented than jazz. 1 4 5 changes and pentatonic scales, I would very much hesitiate to say that; |

I think the reason a lot of people have trouble with this topic is because of people like Sonny Rollins and everything he represents. Nice article in the New York Times today: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/21/arts/music/21son n.html?_r=1&adxnnl=1&oref=slogin&adxnnlx=1161430139-1HPiEaWoEdZAtGRDEpQ0tg And exerpts of his new album, Sonny, Please, can be heard on Sonnyrollins.com. For many of us Sonny represents everything great and wonderful about Jazz. It is that type of exploration and dedication that I feel represents the true jazz artists. For me, the term "Smooth Jazz" represents the opposite of that - the opposite of everything Mr. Rollins has upheld. [This message was edited by Bill McCloskey on 21 October 2006 at 04:36 AM.] |

Yeah Bill thanks, Dang, those excerpts sound great! Yes "real jazz" if there ever is a definition for it. The second horn is so much different than I did an album of mostly improvised music It also had Joe Locke on vibes / vibe synth, |
