My best hopes and wishes for a complete and speedy recovery.

I met Russ when he was staying in NY and playing in the Hank Williams show. It's a shame to hear of this unfortunate accident.

I went to see Russ this evening in Cox Hospital in Springfield, Missouri. He is in room 802 and they have him registered as James Wever. Russ is in great spirits. He told me he was a little messed up but he was going to make it. He was in a pretty bad car accident on highway 248 in Branson. They had to cut him out of the car. Russ told me he was out for a while and finally head people talking about how they were going to get him out. He said he then realized he was in his car and was in Branson. Russ told me his was on his way over to Milton Quackenbush's place. Milton used to play piano for Mel Tillis, and is now with the Baldknobber's Show. Tomarry, Friday, July 23, Russ told me he gets his hip worked on. So tomarrow might not be a good day to call or go see him. He talked like things would be better for visitors or callers on Saturday. I plan on going to see Russ more. I will keep everyone informed.

Saw Russ yesterday. He was in great spirits. He is in Cox South, Hospital in Springfield, MO. He is in room 802. However you might not be able to reach him, because he has his computer on most of the time. It is on the forum most of the time so please say Hi to Russ here and keep him in your prayers.

Hey, Russ!

So you're reading the goings on here are you?

Well, we sent you a card, but it was before I knew the room #, and I didn't know to put 'James'. So, if it doesn't reach you, the thought was there!

As you can see, we're all very concerned for you, and wish you as speedy a recovery as possible. I hope they're giving you stuff to keep you comfortable and take the pain away.

All our best wishes, Russ.

Friends, thanks so much for your well-wishes, prayers and general concern.
After the smash they took me to the Branson hospital, but three days later moved me here to Cox Hospital in Springfield where there is a surgeon reknown for his expertise in type of surgery I need.

On Friday the surgeon operated on my right hip, and on Monday they will rebuild the left shoulder, as it's dislocated and the upper humerus is fractured.
This'll be followed by up to a week of recouperation and then beginning the 'long stretch' of 'rehab'. We'll begin rehab here then later I'll be moved home to Independence.

I actually feel quite like I 'got off the hook easy'. I coulda had my flesh tore up and spilled guts and blood, coulda had my head tore up, or coulda ruined my spine and been a 'pickle' from here on out, but God didn't have it that way, and this is where my thanks goes.

There is one surgery left tomorrow followed by several months of rehab work afterward, so please continue sending up prayer. Your posts here, as well as calls, are very welcome and encouraging.

I joined the forum today in part just to get this up. I know a lot of the guys here, and go back a long way with several of them. Russ Wever and I go back 25 years or more.. Being a lowly guitar player might get me run off once in a while.
We have a fund set up for Russ. Anyone wanting to send donations can send them as follows.

Attention: Sue Downs
Blue Ridge Bank and Trust Company
Suite 100
4240 Blue Ridge Blvd.
Kansas City, MO. 64133

Make checks payable to: James R. Wever

I talked with Russ this AM. His hip surgery went well, and they are to do the left shoulder/arm surgery tomorrow morning.
He'll have some rehab time in Springfield and then home to KC for the rest of his recovery. He said it will be a few months before he can put full weight on his hip.
I'm sure any help will be greatly appreciated by Russ and Carla, John Kaigley.

I spoke with Russ' wife, Carla, a little while ago. She said Russ made it through the shoulder surgery with flying colors. She was a little concerned about him still being asleep 5-6 hours later, but the hospital staff said he was just fine. Shoot, I've seen Russ sleep for 24 hours straight lots of times. I'll keep everone posted as I get more info.

. . . had the (left) shoulder operation yesterday. It seemed to 'beat up' on me a little moreso than last weeks hip surgery.
The doctor decided to rebuild, rather than replace.
Maybe I missed my opportunity to see if he coulda done something in there to 'tweak up' my bar intonation a little . . . maybe like a '442' setting instead of a '440' setting!!
Ha, ha!
Later today they'll have me standing on my 'good' leg, slightly swingin' the left arm to see how much the shoulder will deviate. . . llpp!! I think I feel dizzy already!

Hi Russ..Johnny and I were very sorry to hear of the accident, but we're so happy you are on the mend. Hope you can come to St. Louis. What you need to do is get a little bell so you can ring it when you need something I know Carla will be right there for you through your recup time too. Give yourself time to heal. I hope we get to see you in St. Louis..we'll continue to pray for your continued recovery and extra quick healing time.

Russ, hang in there pal.

I had my left shoulder rebuilt March 24th. It's a tough go, but hang in there and do the therapy. Yes, they started me out just letting it dangle straight down. But I'm 4 months into it now and doing great. It will still be awhile before I can lift anything heavy with it but I have almost full range of motion. Small steps, you'll get there.

Today I got discharged from surgical recouperation and admitted to the 're-hab'section of the hospital here in Springfield, MO.
As it is now, I'm basically a one-armed, one-legged guy with one useless arm and one useless leg dangling, but in 're-hab' here, they'll teach me how to pretty much fend for myself in my basic needs once I get back home. Once home, I'll have further 're-hab' to regain the use of the 'danglers'.
Kinda like going from the war zone back thru basic training, huh. When the time comes, it'll be curious to see how it'll be hangin' on to a bar!
We were very surprised to find out that they're bringing a second bed into my room and Carla, who is dedicated to being by my side as much as possible throught my hospitalization, will be able to stay right in the room with me '24/7'. She had been spending many overnites scrunched up in a chair next to my bed in the surgery section, so this'll be a nice relief for her, too.
Thanks to everyone here for your continued prayers, support and posts,
~Russ

Congrats Russ! You've been thru the hardest part- I know- I have gone thru major shoulder surgery myself and it's wonderful that the decision was made to rebuild what you have instead of replacing it. To me that means that the surgeon found it be less rather than the usual more of a problem once he/she got in there- great news!!! Really looking forward to seeing you soon~~ Jim

Thanks, guys - I've been in rehab since Friday and am making good headway - so much so that they are releasing me Friday on 'good behaviour', .
Along with the physical therapy, today I got my lesson in moving from the wheelchair into the auto today, so that Carla can take us home, where I'll resume with the 'long-haul' in-home rehab.
One concern is that with my left fore-arm at my side, I can raise my left-hand about six inches but just can't make it move to the left or right, in other words, if behind a steel,I wouldn't be able to make the bar move! When I expressed concern about this, they checked the nerves and found them to be intact, so the lack of sideways movement is likely due to the swelling that is still in the arm, and should return with time and excersize.
Between the visitors, emails, friend, phone calls and posts here, and my absolutely terrific family, I'm really in great spirits and 'rearin' to go'and get this behind me.
~Russ

Home at last!
Got home Friday, three weeks after the smash. Got 'settled in' over the weekend and am on my excersize regimen. Carla and I'll go back to Springfield for an appointment with the surgeon on the 27th - and from there we plan to point the car towards St. Louis and be on our way to visit ISGC 2004,
thanks to Scotty and Marys hospitality! Hoping to see many of you there and say thanks in person.

Russ, down to one arm, & one leg...sounds to me like you're on your way to becoming a Pirate! They only have one arm, with a hook, one leg with a peg, and one eye with a patch! Hopefully you'll be able to still play the "Bud Issac" pedal?
Good luck to you and yours, "She'll take 8"

Jon . . If you only knew how l-o-n-g it takes! Actually, I've had to go from being a 'two index-finger-tip' typer to a right-handed 'thumb & index' style!

Don . . A pirate, huh!? Guess my nickname would hafta be 'Captain Crunch', and I'd hover my left foot over the pedals for suspense!
Anyhow, that's fast on water!
