Wow, I missed some good stuff on the forum while I was away, Rick's recording of Pork Pie hat being one of them.

Rick this is really fantastic!. Your tone, feel, choice of notes and harmony are terrific. When your vocal comes in, it is truly haunting and right in the Mingus/Miles vein. I'm sure Mingus would have really liked your rendition. You may want to send it to his wife, Sue Mingus at mingusweb@mingusmingusmingus.com

I sent you an email too, Happy New Year!

Sam

I'm blown away. I had seen the thread and scrolled right by it, not knowing what I was missing. I'm glad you alerted me.
Rick, I too am excited about checking out the new MSA. I'll report my findings.

Unbelieveable Rick!! You are truly innovative and amazing! It's hard enough to play jazz on steel, let alone to sing too. Not only that but you're a great lead guitarist, and expert bassist too! Some guys like you just got a double portion on talent! How about making a steel guitar CD this New Year?
Cheers, Derek

Aww Geezz! I had this about half downloaded and got side tracked. Finally got to it today.

What a track. I ain't got the words.

I'd pay fifty bucks admission to watch a single act like that. Seriously.

Don't discount trying a single. At least try it with a couple hours material. Mose, etc. Man you'd SELL.

Another thought might be "Music of the Night" from the Phantom of the Opera.

Either way, what you've done is GREAT!

Rick. This is one of the best things I have ever heard on this steel forum. If more steel players were as musically adventurous as yourself, there would be so many more doors opened to this great instrument.
Off the hook!!

Hey Rick

I'm a little late coming on to this - I was pointed to it by Gerry Hogan. It is really something - let's have some more of this to listen to.

I most certainly echo all the accolades each of you have posted, and I have many more of my own which I have expressed to Rick personally.

I most sincerely hope and encourage Rick to continue sharing his marvelous talent. I would like nothing better than to be on the front row of one of his concerts, and first in line to purchase anything he ever records.

Whoa! I am not worthy!!!!

Thanks so much guys!

And Reece!...You have long been and continue to be one of my musical hero's. You were one of the first steelmasters (if not THE first) that showed me early on that this instrument was indeed capable of playing the kind of music that was my first love...modern jazz. Thank goodness for the guy (whoever he was?) that played me one of your recordings the first week I had a pedal steel! After that first exposure, I always had that sound in the back of my mind as I fought with the steep learning curve. Thanks for the lift!!!

Rick, absolutly incredible. A few of us here at MSA took a break a few minutes ago and gathered in an office and listen. Now that our teeth are all back in we are scratching our heads trying to figure out how you did it. An entire album should be your next step.

Hi Rick,
Very impressive version of Pork Pie Hat! The voice leading works very well and most important, you have a great feel for jazz. Please do the music world a favour; record a jazz CD. Bravo! Bob

This is a very beautiful arrangement, thanks for sharing it. I'm glad I was able to help you with the lyric.

I'm 'shedding this tune now with a jam trio I have. Our version uses clarinet, viola da gamba, and tablas. This is such a strong tune that any new approach just reveals something new about it. God bless the late Mr. Mingus.

Also thanks again John K. for helping with those lyrics! Good luck with playing GPPH with your band.

Wayne...I think it's the style of hat that Lester Young wore. Kinda like Porky Pig's fedora. Jazz wear of the 30's and 40's.

Cool Buck! It's one of my favorite changes

Where'd you put it? Alot of these chords have to do with the low F to D in conjunction with a KL that raises both E's to F. Definitely worth considering IMHO. I'll be anxiously awaiting a clip from you soon!

Rick, this playing is really YOU!As you played many times on my steel during the last tour it was this beautiful, yes haunting, style I adore. and I know you master every little note that sounds there. And I know you even don' t need to use pedals for this, what's in your head comes out of your guitar. And add then this beautiful voice, together a piece of art, Rick!! I'm sorry Rick,it's not a real hitsong , not even on the tearjerker top 40, but it shows your feelings, knowledge and musical taste. All that Kevin said! Dan Tyack, you won't be sorry to record with Rick, you both would team up great! OK Rick, get your belly in the wetsuit and think about a new song on the surfboard, I like to hear more of this!
All the best,and take care,
Johan

Rick, When will you have an album ready? I liked Dan Tyack's idea... I would be first in line to purchase it!

Once again, BRAVO!!!

Wow. Great playing Rick!

I love the piece, though I'm more used to it in the Joni Mitchell /Jaco Pastorius version.

Great sound and vocals as well. I'm in awe

Rick,
Porkpie Hat is one of my favorites, and this one beats Joni Mitchell's version for it's personal feel, and the warmth of the voice makes it. If you had an album like this, I'd buy it.

I'd really like to hear Lush Life; that would complete the deal for me.
This is the best thing I've heard on the forum. I gotta listen to it again.

Rick is an awesome musician, and his steel playing and singing on "Pork Pie Hat" completely blows my hat in the creek.

He was kind enough to play guitar for JayDee, David and I when we played a concert in Oceanside Calif. for "Steel Guitars of North County" last April.

Just as I expected, he's also a monster guitar player. Most importantly for me, Rick is as fine a person as he is a musician.

I hope Rick will continue to share his music with us. I have already told him I want anything he ever records.

Rick, as you know I've been mostly away for some months, and having returned, I've been reminded of your great playing and singing, from this posting - (I emailed you about it back then, since I was not registered on the Forum at the time).

You really are very special and I feel so amazed that you are coming over to Europe shortly to play bass, standing right next to me, while I'm dithering with the instrument of 20 strings.

It's jolly-well not cricket, old chap. I mean, after all, play fair!

Seriously, I'm really looking forward to seeing you and working with you again very shortly, Rick. By the way, the removal van is booked for the day you arrive. O.K.?

Gerry
