How about Walter Haynes, Randy Reinhardt, Denny Mathis, Weldon Myrick, and Ralph Mooney? There have been so many that have contributed to our passion for steel guitar.

We have a Steel Guitar Hall of Fame that honors many great steel guitarists. This guy is asking a simple question: "Who's the greatest?". One name.

For Bill Hatcher: Your post is both interesting and truthful. About 2 weeks ago, I wrote Mr. Ken Kase (as well as Craig Havigurst of the Nashville Tennesean 2 years ago en re his very myopic view of steel guitar performance). Mr. Kase wrote me back and apologized for his basic ignorance of the PSG, stating that he was a PR man. Mr. Havigurst never replied. His "journalistic" viewpoint of the PSG did not go beyond the boundries of Davidson County (Nashville). One would think that a PROFESSIONAL journalist would do at least a little home work as opposed to hodgepodge material that merely takes up news space. That kind of analysis leaves innovators such as Mike Perlowin and Albert Vescovo in a little room by themselves. Albert is a magnificant soloist and has a track record almost to the moon. I continue, however, to hope that Clubs and Forums will think in terms of ADVANCEMENT of the PSG, and to realized that 3-chord musics are only a commercial entity. HJ

At the risk of being beaten by the crowd, I'd like to submit that if indeed Buddy Charleton plays at the ISGC, there might be a realignment of a few choices..

Mine certainly won't change..

Vision, creativity, skill on E9, skill on C6, range of styles, studio, live, speed-playing, slow-playing, improvisation, musicality, mechanical invention of guitar, pedals, picking tehniques, influence on other players, etc, etc. There may be subjective preference, but only one objective answer - EMMONS.
