This has been the most fun thread in a while (except possibly the Marvin Segall stuff).
I play in a lot of situations from wearing
a suit and tie in church to jeans and black
t-shirt in a biker bar. I sometimes play
with Don Helms and Chris Malpass in a Hank
tribute and we dress vintage Grand Ole Opry.
Even the guys who dress in torn jeans and tank tops are actually "conforming" because
that is what is expected by their audience.
Our band dressed that way in the 70's and
once when I suggested we get just one matching outfit for big money convention
work, the bass player told me in no uncertain terms "I'm not wearing a uniform for anybody". Two weeks later, he informed me he might have to leave the band if his new
job came thru. I asked where and he replied "U.P.S."
