Go for it Jim! This happens more than you'd think, at very pro levels.

Since you made the tracks it's even more justifiable, but that's not really necessary.

It's good you clarified that you will have a real Steel Guitar, otherwise folks might think you're "Air Ironing".

I think I'll bring my little E9 student model Dekley; no point in lugging a big ol' D-10 to a game of charades. And I really like the idea of the cane and dark glasses... Hmmm... I wonder what the singer would do...

Yeah, maybe since I don't have to really play, I can just gyrate a lot and help change the image of the stony-faced steeler staring at his hands all night.*

An agent gives you a gig like this..well go for it...at least they have you in mind and think you can act a bit....I think last one we did......I was on a Keyboards...Bass player friend out of another band was on guitar..they just wanted a few people who could fake it....I've been doing that in what ever situation arose for all of my life !!!!!!

A lot can be said for a gig with guaranteed no broken strings, right ? Just don't reach for a drink during a ride.

I think you should do it, Jim...and when a hot 6 string lead comes up, kick back your pack seat, stand up and do your best Rusty Young impression and make them think it's you...when a steel part comes up, lay out and look at the bass player.

Jim,

My first such "air steel" experience was in making a western movie back in 1949. We went into the studio and cut the sound track. When it came time to film the movie, the director wouldn't let me use my Fender T8, saying it looked too modern for the movie. So, they gave me a single-neck 32 string thing that looked like something from Mars. I really had a blast faking it by rapidly moving the bar up and down the neck and back and forth across the strings while my right hand zipped back and forth across all 32 strings.

Well, it's over! What a hoot! I had a blast; mostly because the singer is really excellent and he really knows how to work the crowd, and the crowd just loved it. I just sat in the backline, and could do no wrong! It was like a steel player's dream... Everything I played came out perfect!

It's not as much fun as really playing, but the money was the same, and the crowd dug it just as much, and I didn't have to worry about JI or ET or anything! I could even forget what key we were in and it still didn't matter! Hah!

I was just glad some kid didn't walk onstage and discover that the cord coming out of my volume pedal didn't lead to anything! LOL!

Jim I am sure the crowd enjoyed it. They did get to hear your great original recording anyway, so all was not lost....al

A couple of my students decided that their video project would be a film of a Metal Concert.
As usual the band mimed to the recording, but even the audience were miming.
They recruited a crowd of performing arts students to "Mosh" in front of the stage, and with some clever lighting and photography, they have a major rock gig on film.
If you watch the video, they now seem to be the only Metallers in the world with a predominently young female fanbase.
Funny old world isn't it?
Cheers

But Jimbeaux,

Everything you play, just about, comes out perfect. Amp or no amp.

And I got two of your CDs to prove it.

I woodah loved a gig like you just had.

More power to ya.

Do it, Jim - it's tough enough to get any kind of gig these days.

And that is the sad truth. May as well do it, and collect your money. What can it hurt.

Ah, here's another good thing about having done it: the money they paid me is going straight to the studio on Tuesday night where I'm recording my 3rd CD, so it bought me another session! Ya gotta love that... It's kinda like "bartering" my services, but with different people...
