re: the "Lester lick"...I would submit that the steel guitar equivalent of the false fingering lick used by Lester Young on the tenor saxophone would be the "doo-wah" tone control lick used by Speedy West and other non-pedal steel players of that era. Both are a tone change to a single note (or chord, in the case of steel guitar) to create an emphasis in a swinging phrase. As far as guitar players, I don't really know who borrowed what from whom or when. All the unison licks I've heard on E9 pedal steel are applied in an entirely different context, and as such are unrelated to the above, or so it seems to my (uneducated) ear And now, back to the topic at hand... The lick I'm talking about is the "first string raise a whole tone", not the "same note to same note on the next string down lick". bobbeseymour [This message was edited by BobbeSeymour on 04 November 2003 at 10:51 AM.] |

Ricky,YOU be da man, man! Wow, that was incredible. For all you young players who want to know what to learn and how to do it, look at this video and practice every lick Ricky has soo eloquently shown you, and if the day should ever come when you can do it just half as good as friend Ricky, You will be one fantastic steel player. Cuz bubba, it is ALL there. Ricky, absolutely awesome job! Just watching and listening to it, is a treat I have not had the pleasure of in a very long time. May Jesus continue to nurture your unbelievable talents, Luv ya man, carl |

OK, Bobbe - we agree (for once!) on that one; I can well believe that you heard it twenty-one times on a single CD. That 1st string 'raise' to match the 3rd string is way over-used.I still like the single-note-repeat one, though - I'd forgotten it until this 'thread' started, and I've just been practising with it. It's a good fretting exercise.... Roger |

I don't think this would have gotten near as interesting if Bobbe could have figured out what it was about a few hours sooner. Now that we know what he thought it was about it can probably start all over again. Jerry |
