Many seems to use the old BL 705 on the "older" Franklins.
Later Franklin steels seems to be equipped with BL 710`s... This is just the way Paul F. Jr. have his two main steels set up.Well, how about a single coil on a Franklin...? Does anyone use a single coil? Dag[This message was edited by Dag Wolf on 11 March 2005 at 07:24 PM.] |

Dag,I use TrueTones on my Franklin D10. They are great!!!!!!!!. You can see a picture here.

Bob, WOW that steel looks GREAT!! What do you think about the sound these pickups deliver - have you tried other pickups? I suspect that Franklin steel do sounds great with single coils pup`s though I never heard about anyone using a single pup. Come on you Franklins pickers... tell me what you like... OK I could be wrong but it seems to me that my first Franklin (circa 1979) had a Franklin pickup. WHich was a hand wound (by Paul Sr.) single coil Emmons kinda deal. I've tried a bunch of pickups since then, but have constantly gone back to the BL 705. Actually, on one of my Franklins I have a BL 805 on the C6th neck. |

My late 82 Franklin came with BL 705's. Paul had quit winding his own by then and told me there was no use winding his own pickups when the 705's were the best available. I replaced them with BL710's several years ago and I'm happy with the710's. It didn't change the sound of the guitar but there seems to be more "spacing" or better definition between strings. According to Paul Franklin, SR, Paul Jr has guitars with the 705's and with 710's and he gets his same sound out of both. |

Dag,Thanks! I took the picture out on my front deck. I have 3 guitars Franklin, Carter S10, Emmons D10 PP. I have TT pickups on all the guitars. The only pickups that I've tried on the Franklin is the TT. It's hard to describe the sound of the Franklin. I usually play it through an Evans amp. (I have a Steel King on order) The guitar realy cuts through the mix without playing loud. The guitar has a very soft sound (no harshness)abundent sustain which suites my style of play and on the slow stuff I milk it for all it's worth.  When required It seems that I can hold a note forever. I am mostly a living room player and play a fairly simple style. Of course I do use tab and general licks as a basis but alot of it, is just what I feel while playing. Ever since I received this guitar people often invite themselves to my place to hear me play.(they even come back) So far I've only use the Franklin to play out a few times but I get plenty of complements, usually a new job offer. Recently I got invited to do a series of concerts over the summer. I have some pictures of our practice session here.

I switched from the BL 710's to Jim Pitman's pickups on my Franklins and to my ear it was a big improvement.
