One of most interesting topics I've run across talking to steel players is the color of there personal guitars. So I've listed my top two choices here: (1) Black (2) Rosewood >> Let's hear from some pickers and see what the top color probably is.

Natural wood, Sunburst shaded on the outsides, Blue or Red aprons with natural wood on top and everybody knows that black sounds better.

I think that just about any of the Williams Laquer finishes are the prettiest guitars being made. Blue is my favorite color, but I wouldn't turn any of those finishes away.

I like royal blue the best but am enjoying my black 66 Emmons just fine and the black does look classy. Plus is sounds better.

You have to have a Black mica guitar. No other ones have the sound.

I've got a black mica 68 Emmons that I love, but my favorite one is my natural finished wooden neck 77 Emmons.

I have two great Mullen guitars, one is about the prettiest blue woodgrain ever, and looks better (to me). The other's gloss black, and I have to say it does sound better. No kidding....
I did an interview with Jimmy Crawford shortly before he died and he insisted that the "myth" of black Emmons Guitars sounding better was true. He said the thickness, composition, and glue process was different with the black mica, and after working on a thousand guitars, very noticeable. I'm not sure there are many folks with more experience than Jimmy, so...

Its hard for me to understand the color changing the tone or sound.
How can Black make it sound better?

My favorite steel guitar colors are Rosewood, black, red, and blue maple which is the color of my current guitar, Mullen RP.

Green, of course, my favorite color, period. I have a Carter "Birdseye Green" D10. I have seen some very, very nice blue guitars, too.

Black is my first choice and black is my second choice. I have had sunburst which was nice and rosewood. Blue is my favorite color but I do not think I would want a blue guitar. To me the red steels look nice as well.

I have a natural blonde and a red one (both Sho-Buds). I like both colors except the red looks brown or an ugly purple under stage lights. I was going to try a black one for that reason but when I saw that beautiful blonde (pro_III) well, I just fell in love.

When I first decided to get into pedal steel, in 1965, a steel guitar looked like either a Bigsby, a Fender, a rosewood/maple Sho~Bud, or a black Emmons. Those are my color choices and what I own and play today.

My Williams is ebony stained maple. It's black for the tone ( ) and lacquered to show off the pretty wood grain.

Red, definitely, for a laquer guitar.
I thought my red Sho-Bud was about
the prettiest steel I ever played. My Thomas is
more of a burgundy sunburst. If I had a mica guitar, I'd have to go with black. I just don't think mica should "try" to look like wood!

The two prettiest guitars I've seen were both Fulawkas. One was the single 12 that Len Amaral had for sale on here last year ( it's sort of a very deep, rich rosewood color ) and the other was the 'Blue Darlin'' that Ricky Davis sold awhile back.

If it's mica - black.

If it's natural wood, brown or cordorvan.

Mine is definitely not the "right" color. When I learned where "that sound" is coming from, I dragged my honey maple Sho~Bud out to the street for the trash pickup. People would walk by it as it sat at the curb.

"Hey, a steel guitar! And it says Sho~Bud on it!"

"Yeah, but its not black. Its impossible to get a good tone out of that guitar. Let's look around and see if any BLACK steels are getting thrown out this week."

I look out my window, and there it sits. Nobody wants it. I sure wish it was black. I might go get it if it was.

Thanks guys, a lot of good responses. I think black mica is probably the #1 pick. As for me, I've had all different colors over the years. I do the color like I do the brandname on a guitar. Once I start playing it I usually forget about the color or what name is on the front. As long as it stays in tune and sounds like I want it are the most important things to me. But I'll tell you when your in the market to buy a steel guitar there are so many pretty colors and color combinations that it's a hard decision to make sometimes. I just wish there was sunburst mica. Keep the colors coming!

Someone on the forum said red is the fastest playing color, but I'm not sure about that since mine is red. Maybe I'll catch up to speed with it later!

The only Remington steel I had was San Antonio red. I think that's what Herby called it. Almost looked like it had a pink tint to it under the lights. Was a beautiful guitar w/pearl inlay.

I have a gloss black lacquer, and a gloss black mica, both sound great. But, I'm beginning to like these blue maple lacquer ones' that are becoming popular.

PS- the only problem, with the black ones, is keeping the keyhead area free of dust.

Since I now own one, Glossy~Black would be my choice for Mica, but; for Wood~Finish I'd opt for Dark~Mahogany!

What? No purple Zum?

Seriously, how DO you keep the keyhead dust free on a black guitar? I sometimes get in there with a q-tip when I'm changing strings. Best, -Dave ('95 Mullen - black)
