I would like to know, by proof the year and date when you got your first BJS Bar.The guy that's got the oldest BJS Bar, and the guy that has the most (more than three) BJS Bars by proof will get a prize. The prize will be a stock BJS Bar with your Birthstone from any size that I make.So let me see you guys enter to win. I will run this for 1 month so Feburay 16th 2006 will the winner be picked. If I were you I would enter because the guy that has the oldest bar may not see this forum. Good Luck! Bill |

Bill -- I've only got two, so I can't enter, but -- they are terrific bars. Really smooth on the strings and a great feel. The Jerry Byrd bar I got from you has a great, contoured tip.Al |

Bill, The bar you replaced for me last month was sent back in the original plastic box that I got when I bought it from HerbyW. I think it was in the late 70's.-very early 80"s Bo Borland |

Mr Stroud, will you be at the show in Dallas this year? I have a 7/8 bar that I think is a BJS but I'm not sure, there is just a hole in the end. It is by far my favorite. I want a new 15/16, but I would like to try some different lengths first. This is 3 1/4 and I can't keep my index finger from curling over the end, I hope a little longer bar will cure that.------------------ Howard, 'Les Paul Recording, Zum SD12U, Carter D10 8/8, Vegas 400, Boss ME-5, Boss DM-3, DD-3, Fender Steel King, Understanding wife. http://www.Charmedmusic.com

I bought my BJS bar from Bill at the 1983 Steel Guitar convention in St. Louis. I've never had a need for another one. It's been dropped many times and sometimes on concrete. Never a dent. All that's ever happened is the birthstone broke out a few times. I just go to the local jeweler and get one and glue it in myself. There is sure no chrome to peel off because he told me at the time it wasn't coated with anything. Just made out of really hardened shiney steel. I think it cost me 40 bucks at the time. Best money I ever spent. I might go ahead and buy another one at Dallas this year because Bill is such a nice guy ------------------ Mullen D10-8/5 Sho-Bud S10-3/4 Evans Amps "Making The Stars Shine"

Bill -- I almost hate to admit it, but I actually own six BJS bars. I have a 1" 12 string, three 15/16" 12 strings, [one plain, one with green stone, and one with clear stone], and two 10 string bars. One 7/8", and one 15/16". I have enjoyed all of them at various times but currently I'm using the 15/16" 10 string bar on my 12 string Carter. I don't remember when I bought the first one, but the last two were the 10 string bars purchased through Al Brisco at Steel Guitars Of Canada in Aug. 05. I'll line them up later today and e-mail you a picture. George |

well i know i won't be winning this contest, 'cause i just got my bar yesterday! i doubt anyone's is newer than that...just wanted to say a few things, basically all of it echoing what's been said: 1. thanks for the tips i picked up here in this post. i am glad i went with the 15/16ths and i wouldn't have known about it or made the decision if it weren't for you guys. 2. talk about fast! bill emailed me back within hours with detailed instructions, and my order placed friday evening was shipped and delivered by monday. 3. shirley helped me on the phone. sweet as punch! 4. i'm usually a skeptic about things like cables, bars, picks being a big factor... but this bar has helped my tone, especially the strength and volume and clarity of the harmonics. it is a noticeable improvement. so thanks all around to bill, shirley, and all you with the advice here on this thread. i'm a happy camper. mike |

Bill, I goofed. I gave you back the first "BJS" bar that I got from you. I think it was one of the first you made. But, I can tell all the other guys out there, if your not playing a BJS Bar, your missing out. Sorry I couldn't win even though I have 3 ( I think). See ya in a little while. |

I have 2 BJS bars one with the birthstone circa '96 and a new '05, the older one has been dropped on a concrete floor twice and it still doesn't have a scratch on it...Bill replaced the birthstone (which fell out and got lost) free of charge, he makes the best bars available! |

Well the time has come, and here's my findings, help me out guys if I mess up. But number one (1) The oldest bar was given to Bobby Rice about 1973 that was when I first starting making these bars, it was not heat-treated, hard chromed but I realized after experimenting with the tone the I was looking for the bar had to be heat treated, centerless ground for prefection and industrial hard chromed, then I found the tone that I was looking for. With that being said I took his old bar a and gave him a new perfected bar whaich he still plays, he knew nothing of this posting he stumbled upon it just in the nick of time. So Bobby Rice wins the oldest prize. Number two (2) Dave Ristrim has seven bars he bought his first one at scotty's back in 1985. I sure thought that George Macdonald had it with his six (6) bars, and Bo Borland came close to winning if Bobby Rice hadn't seen this post. So the winners as I see it is Bobby Rice and Dave Ristrim. Hey guys send me your address and give me a call at 731-364-3519, email your address at bjsbars@frontiernet.net Also I'm waiting to here from Mr Bobby Lee Hey Leon Champion give me a call I'll make it up to you my friend, you deserve it you've really been a friend to me and my family. Like I said some of the best people that's on this earth is right here on this forum. Keep God first in your life and all the rest falls into place. Thanks to all my friends, Bill & Shirl Girl |

Thanks Bill. I really didn't expect to win anything but boy am I glad I did. What a stroke of luck. I was just browsing the forum yesterday morning when I saw the post about the contest and it rang a bell about the old bar that I had. It had"BJS" stamped into the butt of the bar. I just want to let everyone know that Bill and Shirley are some of the greatest people in the world. Glad to have you as my best buddy. God Bless.Bobby Rice Dresden TN. |

Wow. Excellent! I love these bars and can't see a better one coming along to make me switch. The reason I have 7 is so I can have one in each pac-a-seat, a couple at home for practice and then a few spares. At one point, I think Bill moved and I had a hard time tracking him down, then a rumor that he stopped making the bars, so I bought 3 more just in case! what a marketing concept Thanks Bill, for all the great product and making playing the Pedal Steel easier and more fun. Mr.Stroud, I've just been reading all the wonderful things these guys have been saying about your bars (and you!). I have a few Ernie Ball bars. They advertise two weights - 6.3 oz and 7.8. But the two Ernie Balls of mine that have the most sustain turn out to weigh 10 oz! What's the weight of your standard bar? Thanks. Tony. |

Tony,I've been stocking BJS Bars for 19 years in my little shop, since Hal Rugg played at my Festival in 1986, and sang the praises of these great bars. I have been using one myself (7/8-inch) for all that time, too and I still use the same bar I first had - it still looks as good as the first day I bought it. It weighs 9.5 oz. About a year ago I bought a 15/16-inch bar and I love that, too. It weighs 10 oz. Gerry Hogan |
