Martin. Checked out the nwtimber site. Most of the maple is saw there is western maple. Softer and usually a wider grain pattern than eastern rock maple which is the more used species for steel guitars. They did have some pretty and expensive wood.

Mark and Bill, on the west coast in the foothills elavations, we have an oak called "scrub" or "white" oak. It is not deciduous, and only drops it's leaves under drought stress. This wood grows very slow, and very dense. When sawn the wood is often very figured, and a dark brown to grey in color. When dried it "rings" when you hit hit.... seems to me it would be a great wood for a steel.... anyone ever use this?

Not to hijack your thread Jon, just thought since we're getting all this great info on wood I'd pop this question.

Not a problem, David. Asked and answered (my question). The rest of this is just good info and good discussion.
