Buddy, With regard to the recent foto of you with your new Zum..... 1 How are you liking the Zum? 2 What pickups are in the guitar.? 3 Will you be playing it at Dallas next year? Thanks Best regards Billy |

Billy, I like the Zum and the pickups are Lawrence, possibly 710’s, but I’m not sure. Randy Beavers put them in the guitar so maybe he could respond. Any more, I’m hesitant to say much about a guitar until I use it in a live situation. I don’t accept live jobs in Nashville so I won’t know if it’s a keeper until after the St. Louis convention this coming Labor Day weekend. If all goes well, I’ll be bringing it to Dallas next year. |

Yes, they are Lawrence 710's. I've been very impressed with those pickups. You might say I was closed minded to humbuckers until I gave these a try. And trust me, Buddy makes a convincing statement when you hear his tone with them. |

Buddy and Randy, I truly enjoy reading your post on the Forum. everyone has an opinion on what a guitar should sound like, but I prefer to listen to what the pro's have to say. Buddy, my cousin Dave tells some great stories from the old Sho-Bud days. you guys should write a book. He told me this week he still misses "pop" and he talks about Jimmy sometimes also |

Thanks Roger but I would like to limit the steel shows to two a year. St. Louis is four months away and I’m wracking my brain trying to come up with something I haven’t played to death. |

Hi again Buddy, Reading your last post has given me an idea, how about Forum members suggesting something for you to play. You will certainly get a varied selection and it may just lead to another best seller album. If it does perhaps I'll recieve a signed copy. regards Billy |

The steel shows are great. But I miss the old days when Buddy did concert-jams. Back then. He played till he got tired. The longer he played. The better he played. Those were the days.......... |

Thanks Roger. I had forgotten that song and yes, it’s a dandy. My statement about trying to come up with tunes may have been a bit tongue-in-cheek, but with only 30 minute segments to work with, it’s harder to pick the tunes and build the momentum Bobby Boggs was referring to. Subtract five or more minutes for setup and breakdown of each player and you find yourself watching the clock and hoping you can get everything in that you planned to play. On the other hand, we’ve all been to shows that end up running an hour or more behind schedule, and that’s not good for the audience or the players.I’ll open the St. Louis convention Friday night and play around 25 minutes before I introduce Johnny Bush. That should take up the best part of an hour before we have to move on. I have most of my tunes picked but still would be interested in seeing what some of the steel guitar fans with hundreds of miles and dollars invested in the convention would like in the way of music. It will all boil down to opinion but maybe it would enlighten some of the players preparing their music for the show.

A tune that comes to mind I've only heard you play once is "Exodus." That was my first year to come to St. Louis, and you played it with Darrel McCall's band. It would be tough for you to recreate the flute player having to break into the bus again to get his flute. |

Buddy, I bought the new Willie Nelson album " You don't know me" songs by Cindy Walker, what guitar are you playing on this album? IMHO your playing is as good as it gets powerful C-6 and smooth and tasteful E-9th. I also enjoyed all the other pickers. This album is done with great taste. IMHO it will be a classic album. Willie's singing is as enjoyable as I ever heard him. Keep it coming Buddy. Bill Bailey------------------

The tune, "Blue Eyes", from the CD "The Swing Shift Band and Other Things" is becoming one of my favorites for sure. I would also vote for "Bitter They Are". The Swing Shift Band really opened my mind even more to the Big Band Era Classics! What a great era of music. Both are great examples of your work! I hope to see you in St Louis this year and Dallas next year. I hope all is well with you and your family. |

Raisin the DickensChicken Shack Girl From Ipanema Mercy Mercy Mercy You Take me For Granted Mardi Gras Once Upon a Time in The West Sleepwalk Anything by Stan Getz or Parker.. you've got three months right? Sleepwalk may seem like an overdone tune but I've never heard the Big E do this tune and something tells me it would be the best we've all heard. Mr. Emmons has never played a bad song in his life. I love them all, but "Mansion On The Hill" is on top of my list. It couldn't be done any better. I can listen to this song over and over, and I enjoy "attempting" to play it. Any choice he makes will be great. ------------------ "The Kid" 8&7 Fessenden, Session 500, Session 400, BJS, Goodrich LDR |

With all due respect to the programmers, it seems a crime to limit a master such as Buddy Emmons to a meager time slot of thirty minuets which also includes setting up. If Mr. Emmons desires, please give him adequate time to play a program representative of his many talents and contributions to the entire field of steel guitar. |

Mr. Emmons, I would love to hear you do "Bridge over troubled water". I think that's a fantastic sounding song on the steel, and I've never heard anyone other than Curly C. play it... other than my humble attempt at it that is.Another tune that most wouldn't think of when thinking steel instrumentals, is "Puff the magic dragon". It really sounds GOOD on the steel! |

I must be getting older. The tunes I'd like to hear redone are slow ones. "Broken Down in Tiny Pieces" - "Touch My Heart" - "Long Ago and Far Away".Buddy, I'm sure whatever you decide to play, it'll be fine with everybody. Freddie is always a favorite, too. ------------------ My best, Ernie www.BuddyEmmons.com |
