App: three years ago, I was at Lorrie's house
visiting Lorrie and Casey and my son in Law
John and his son John Jr. we call him J.J.for short,,but like his dad he stands at
6 feet 5 and weighs in at about 220 LBS and that all muscle,,at least he said it is.

This one night I sat and watched the baseball
game as John Sr was at the PC,he is quite knowledgable on the PC,he yelled out,,hey everybody "LOOK AT THIS" we all ran into the
living room,,John said Mr.Carver (Thats what
he calls me) not Jody,not pop,not dad, but as
always to this day (Mr. Carver) some of you out there probably call me other things.

We all ran to where John was sitting at the PC and,I saw a photo that filled the screen of his monitor.
It was a web site called.."Bar Slammers Cocktail Lounge". There was music coming from the site and it was "Brazil" played by Johnny Cucci and myself. I stood there amazed at what I saw and the comments made by this person who did this wonderful tribute to the
HCOA. There was another gentleman on the site
by the name of Joe Maize and his Chordsmen.

Joe was a fine musician and a nice man,I knew
a little about him as we shared the bandstand years back. It was like this man was looking for and paying his respects to music from a long time ago, and more than likely something that had been forgotten.
And that my friends was the case,,,until someone tried to attract attention to these people of which I was a part of.

Three Little Words spell it all.

DAVE VAN ALLEN. That is a name I will NEVER
forget. I right there asked John (Big John) if there was anyway I could get in touch with Mr.Van Allen to thank him,he said sure,lets send him an e mail,I said whats an e mail?,,I didnt know beans about computers and couldn't care less,to me they were a waste of time. Many times John would tell me to get a PC,,I said No Way,,only those who are into that hi tech stuff can do that.

John typed the words of appreciation to Dave
Van Allen as I stood by telling him what to write.

A few weeks later John called and said Dave
had replied to my e mail. Very few if any know that Dave and I have never met,in fact we never even had a telephone conversation.
That still holds true to today.

I saw on Buy and Sell that Dave was looking for a Fender Volume and Tone pedal. I had second thoughts regarding contacting him about his request,I was afraid to say NO and yet I wanted to see him have it.

I try to keep what little memories I have left for myself. This pedal was the same one I
used on the HCOA,and I was hesitant on my making an offer to Dave. I didnt want to say
NO,,and I wasn't sure I wanted to part with it.

I finally decided,OK,what the heck,how often
if any will I use it or play out again.
He wanted this pedal not only because he wanted one, but I believe he felt a personal
thing about it being the same pedal used on the long forgotten and deleted Hot Club LP.

He asked me how much I would want,the money to me was not the issue,it was whether or not
I wanted to sell it to him. I pondered over and over and decided OK,,I'll sell it to Dave.

He was most appreciative and asked if I would allow him to make up a web site for the Hot Club Of America.

I agreed but I wondered,,now why would anyone
want to listen to this thing we did so many years ago,where there is such great new players and music out there???.

I never thought much of the HCOA and all of us who recorded that LP knew all to well that
we could have done better than what you hear
today.After all,it was meant as a "demo" and
not a "finished" product. There are many flaws I can hear in my playing as well as the
less than perfect recording techniques.

There were no effects added,we didnt want any
to start with,but when Coral accepted the "demo" we were shocked to learn that in fact they used the "demo" as a master.

To put it straight,,we were not business men,
we were musicians and two people who were supposed to represent Johnny and myself,Augie
and George sold us out,we never got a dime.

The story goes on much more,,but the thing that is most important to me is that Dave Van Allen took a livlely interest in an old
and long discontinued recording and made me
proud. I often wondered why he liked that LP
so much,I really didnt think it was anything
special.

I then bought a computer and found out
about this Forum,I slowly became a pain in the butt to many with my ancient history and more times than not just plain BORING. I never had a copy of the LP..I did years back and loaned it to someone who didnt return it.

A few years back,my good friend Forrest White told me that Leo's wife would be happy
to send the LP I had sent to Leo and his first wife Esther which was signed to Leo & Esther from Johnny and myself and Augie and George.

I received the HCOA LP from Forrest about 7 years ago shortly afterwards Forrest too passed away. Leo passed in 1991,,Forrest in 1995.

Those "Three Little Words"

DAVE VAN ALLEN was what put some life into this other wise lifeless guy,,ME..and for that Iam forever grateful,I'm even starting to play again. Though we have tried,we have never met face to face and with the present
situation here at home,I have had to put that
on hold. But I hope sometime I could shake his hand and say "Thank You" and give him a
big hug.

This is getting long and I know Im boring some if not all of you,so I'll quit for the time being,but I want to tell you a little bit about my daughter Lorrie and my Granddaughter Casey,,I dont think that will bore you,,well maybe? well just a little.

Thanks again Dave. I appreciate all you have done,just look at the friends you have made for me. You have done me proud my friend.

I'll be back when you or "ya'll recover from this episode of my long drawn out stories.
There is more I can say about Dave and what a
fine and unique player he is,,but I will at
another time. Ask him to send you a clip of
his rendition of "Zing Went The Strings Of My Heart" you will feel what I felt,,a fine
musician and more than that a fine man.

It is a great record, demo or not, despite any "flaws" you percieve. It's music worth hearing, and part of what appealed to me so much about it was that it ain't country. It was using steel in a pop music genre, unabashedly forging ahead into uncharted (well, except for chord charts) territory, and basically "taking no prisoners".

You guys deserved so much more recognition in your "time." But life takes it's own turns and twists, and we follow the maker's plan.

I'm just glad I got to hear HCOA, and to share it with others who might never have gotten to hear it. For that I thank my yard-saling spouse. She was the one who found the record with the two smiling Fender players on the front...

Discovering you were still around and so willing to share your memories of those times is the very thick icing on the cake

I didn't just find a great obscure record, I found a friend.

My most heartfelt best wishes for you and Marilyn in your times of trouble.

I received this from my daughter Lorrie and I was not able to place it on the Forum as I dont know how to execute that.This is what was written to me "verbatim" I left nothing out nor added anything,,what you read is as I received it a little while ago. I didnt add or take anything out of the e mail I received from Lorrie and Casey. They are both not aware thatIm posting this,I just wanted to share their feelings of thanks
to all of you.

Casey is 8 years old,and goes to school. She
takes dancing lessons and has a "brown belt" in her Karate class. She is very bright and a sweetheart.

Lorrie was a hairdresser and gave that up to go into the medical field,that career didnt satisfy her. She now works as a teacher in a
special school for "Autistic Children" she is
happy doing what she does best and that is helping and sharing her love with other children who are not as fortunate as Casey.

John,,my son in law is an engineer for a surveying company and he handles all the planning of building site's for major companies.

John plays guitar,,he had a Gibson before he
married Lorrie,,but he had to "get rid of it"
That was the agreement we made,,

John Jr. goes to school and is a very bright young man,he works after school at a
major grocery chain as a check out clerk.
He dont like work too much.

I have another daughter Marie who owns her own telephone company,,how do I know this???
because she calls here 200 times a day.She is
a dental hygienist.

Her husband's name is Hans,he is a "pastry chef" and at present is teaching at a "culinary school" in Manhattan. You dont need to see his picture I have two wonderful grandsons Carl and Greg,,they are
both gentlemen and good boys. Like Howard said "Iam a RICH MAN" now if I could only play like Buddy Emmons..I'd Have The World On A String Sitting On A Rainbow..Lucky Me Im in love,,but regardless Iam a Lucky guy to have a great family and a wonderful wife.

Gene Jones is Casey's favorite steel guitar player,,but she told me she likes me too

BTW,,,John my son in law now plays a FENDER

the Forum photographer Howard R My thanks to what I know is a genuine friend to me. They
dont come any better than Howard. Did any of you know he is really the great grandson of Howard Hughes?? I know because he wears a tuxedo with sneakers and NO SOCKS,,,sometimes
he leaves his pants off as well.

jody; caleb and i sit in my window every morning as we are right now. he has a little cough,,,,,he has been making sounds and wanting the computer to be on, he likes it. now i've found out why. hr fusses until i put up the picture in this thread and then he's quiet as he watches.

he normally wants to see the squirrels and birds and doves that we feed regularly but i see he has found something better,,,,,

She is all that and more to me,,Hi Casey,,dont let these fellows kid you..I'll bring my guitar to school before Christmas,,we have a lot to be thankful for.
