The 30th Annual Pedal Steel Guitar Association show will be held on November 8th and 9th at the Doubletree Club Hotel in Norwalk, Connecticut. This will be the biggest show we’ve ever done. Confirmed steel players include: Randy Beavers, Jim Cohen, Sonny Curtis, Jeff DeMaio with Scott Tyler (twin guitars) and the Gunsmoke band, John Hughey, Doug Jernigan, Jim Roule, Dewitt Scott, Herby Wallace, John Widgren and the Western Caravan band, and Joe Wright.

For the complete show schedule go to: http://www.psga.org

Don’t miss this one! It’s going to be a terrific show.

Yes, this looks like the greatest show ever. The PSGA show is one of my very favorites, easy to find, great hotel with a friendly staff, plenty of good eating places up and down Conn. Avenue and of course plenty of good steel picking.
I'll be going down from Maine and bringing some of my gang with me, none of which are steel players. I guess they want to find out why I'm so attracted to these shows.ha ha
Aren't we lucky to have these? Merle

Come one, come all to the PSGA show.
This should be a super show and great talent to boot.
I'll be driving up from Florida, 1200+ miles for this one. Bob and his staff do a great job and put on one of the best steel shows in the country. So be there and help support the PSGA. I'm looking forward to chatting with some of my old friends I haven't seen in a few years also since moving to Florida.

I just wanted to add that I am again honored and pleased to be a part of this great shows. I have played this show many times and it is without a doubt one of the finest shows in the country. Everything is done strictly first class. Also, I might add that the backup band is always fantastic. The audience at this show is always one of the best anyplace in that they are very aware and hip as to what is being played. I am certainly looking forward to being back in Norwalk.

Thanks for the great response we've had from the posts on this forum. I've just received confirmation that Gene Fields will also attend for the first time, and that he is scheduled to play on the Sunday portion of our PSGA program. This is wonderful news, since Gene is not only a fine player, but dating back to his days with (pre-CBS) Fender, an authentic designer of the Fender pedal steel guitars. Gene continues to build the GFI Steel Guitars.

I'm looking forward to a great show and always enjoy writing the review for the newsletter. This allows me to meet and speak with the players.

Hey wait, this is a very friendly intimate show, you can do that regardless!

John,
The 50th year celebration you ask? As I understand it, it's in the planning stage and if we can get someone to set up our steels and help us up on stage you and I are to play a duet. But I told them only if you promised to slow "Rocky Top" way down to regular speed so I could keep up.

HowardR,
I agree this is a friendly intimate show and that's the beauty of it. It's big enough to have the top notch players but at the same time small enough to allow plenty of opportunity to socialize with them.

We better call the hotel now and lock in the special PSGA room rate. Merle

Looking forward to it again, Bob! Us Rhode Islanders will be there again to hear some great music and enjoy this exceptionally well produced show. With the great lineup of players, the super large video screen to show closeups of the steels, the fantastic backup band, the vendors and a nice hotel (and don't forget the "intimate setting"!).....well it doesn't get any better than this! Keep up the good work!

Wow! You guys are terrific. Thanks for all the kind remarks and comments. It is always a pleasure to meet and greet all our friends from New England and the Northeast states.

The 50th Annual show will probably be titled the Geriatric Special. We can plan to have wheel chair races to see who gets to their steel first. Goodness, I'll be 88 years old in 2023 (Good Lord willin').

Next Friday, October 10th, Mike Gross will feature his annual Swingin' West tribute show to the Pedal Steel Guitar Association 30th Annual Celebration. The program is heard over WVOF-FM in Fairfield, CT from 9 pm until Midnight Eastern Time and may be tuned in on the Internet at: http://www.wvof.org

Mike will be playing steel cuts on Swingin' West for 3 hours. He will feature the artists that are scheduled to play our show. Tune in if you are able, it promises to be a great show!

Hi, Bob - and John,

What's the rate at the hotel, or is it full by now?

It looks like I'm not working that week, and I'd like to make it - the last time I was there I still lived in NYC, so that has to be '97.

I hope to see ALL you guys there, including my friends in Western Caravan. Is Van playing guitar?

best,

RR

Roger: The special Pedal Steel Guitar Association room rate at the Doubletree Hotel in Norwalk, CT is $80 per night. There are plenty rooms still available, but the cut off date is November 1st. It would be great if you could be with us Roger. Don Sulesky is making the trip up from Hernando, FL.

Van Manakas will not be with us this year. He and his wife are expecting another addition to their family in early November, so he has to stay at home in Nashville waiting for the big event. We are pleased that Don Cerce Jr. will be playing lead for us the whole weekend. Don does a great job!

Jody: Of course you are invited to my 88th birthday party in 2023. We can do a duet of Limehouse Blues with lots of Boo-Wahs!

How long is the drive from NYC, please? I can't remember.

I'll do my best to be there - I've missed the last two ISGCs 'cause of gigs, and this'll make up for it.

PS: Van and Patience are into mass-production, aren't they? I'm off to Nashville later this month, and I'll go and say 'Hi'...

Well, I can feel the anticipation, already. This show's gonna be a barn burner!! We're all so lucky to be able to have an organization like the PSGA, with so many good and devoted friends. Without us all, and I do mean everybody in the PSGA, supporting the club, these great shows would never happen. Thanks to you all (ya'll) for your support.

I don't want to wear out my welcome on this topic but I've been thinking about this backup band lately. Of course, the tremendous amount of steel playing talent is obvious by just reading the list of players and I don't know what I could add to that.

As Bob mentioned, unfortunately but for good reason, Van can't make it this year, HOWEVER, Don Cerce jr. is also an excellent guitar player that can play it all, but if anyone likes good country music as much as I do YOU'VE GOT TO HEAR THIS GUY. Playing steel along with Don would be any steel players dream come true. While chatting with him a couple of years ago, he told me he was a plumber by trade on Long Island. I relayed this info to a friend of mine while we were sitting in the front row waiting for the show to start. After it started and Don was just weaving in and out of those smooth, tastfull, clean, two note harmony fills, all my friend and I could do was look at each other with our mouths hanging open. After about three songs my friend looked at me with a very perplexed look on his face and asked "are you sure he's a plumber?"

John: I'm glad you've put Rocky Top aside for now. You've really got to start taking better care of your fingers than that. Being a carpenter and all, you need them things.

Dick Lee: Thanks a bunch for the compliment but let's not get anyones expectations of me too high. If any of these folks ever heard me play where would I be then?

Merle:

What a nice reply to Dick Lee's message. I agree with you entirely. Don Cerce Jr. follows in his dad's footsteps as an excellent lead guitarist. BTW Don Sr. is not only a fine lead player but he also plays pedal steel and is regularly booked doing so.

Merle, unfortunately for us, we have never heard you play steel, but apparently you have a fan club. If you don't tell us you'd like to be part of our show, we'll never know. Since this year's show has gotten so much publicity, we have received many inquiries from name players and local and regional players who would like to be part of next year's PSGA show.(hint)

Don't let the big names intimidate you. We respect everyone who can contribute to our commitment to promote the steel guitar and those who play it!

Steel players come from many backgrounds: I was a Broadcast Engineer for CBS Radio & TV for 28 years, we've had PSGA members from every walk of life - Ordained Ministers, Lawyers, Doctors, Dentists, Police Officers, Tool and Dye Makers Full Time Musicians etc. So the fact that Don Cerce Jr. has his own plumbing business is a fact of life... but he is an excellent musician and he loves to play guitar. We are pleased that he enjoys being part of our show.

Donny has been the guitar player in my band, for the last several years. It's really great to work with him, because, he plays so tastefully. And, he can handle any kind of tune, plus, it gives me a chance to lay back and enjoy the music we're creating.

Merle- I'm working on a new one. It's the "1812 Overture" !!!!

John: I didn't know Don played in your band. So YOU'RE the lucky steel player. Have you ever given any thought to twin steels in your band?

Now let's see, what can we say about Bruce Chappelle? (one of the favorite bass players of the Northeast who also plays steel)
I really like to watch him when Herby Wallace is cutting up on the C6 neck on some good swing tune. His left hand will just be in a constant fluid motion while he's hammering out those never ending scales. He makes it look so easy I don't think his pulse rate even changes. And talk about tone! He sure can dig it out of that stick bass. The first time I heard him I was so impressed that I talked about him up here in Maine for a year.

And that's the other thing, the fun doesn't end when the show is over. More than likely you will have learned something, met some new friends and certainly have something to think about for a long time.

John, will you please ask Darlene to send me your song list with the keys. And don't tell us that Bruce playes in your band too.

Merle:

You said it all! The side men don't get the recognition they deserve. Bruce Chappelle is the man in charge of the back up musicians. He is an accomplished Bass, Lead, Acoustic and Steel Guitarist. A retired high school teacher (Chemistry) who has attained a musicians degree of excellence by all musicians with which he has played. He may have taught Chemistry in school, but for the PSGA Bruce has been the chemistry that keeps the show above all other previously set standards. That's why we chose him for our musicial director.

Bruce has been a PSGA member for more than 25 years. He is a very active member of the organization. Bruce has helped us at the ISGC in St. Louis, for many years, helping to recruit new PSGA members.

I agree with Bob's comment about the backup musicians. To me, one of the many highlights of last year's PSGA Convention was getting to work with the fine backup band. All of the musicians were inspiring, especially Jim and Bruce on the bass guitars. They really know how to establish a groove that helped me to relax and just play the music. Being a high school teacher, it was fun to talk with Bruce at the St. Louis Convention and discuss some of our experiences in the "trenches." To Bob and company, best of luck with this year's PSGA Convention. I know that it will be a blast!

Sorry I'll miss it this year, its always a fantastic show you folkes put together. P.S. Try and find something for Merle to do this year...can you? Hoss and Merle, "Together Again"(Mutt and Jeff)..your wining team.

Dick Lee: I'm sorry you can't be with us. I realize you have another commitment. But Mutt & Jeff won't do. Laurel and Hardy maybe, or perhaps Olson & Johnson or Abbott & Costello. They are all dear to our hearts as are Hoss and Merle. That's what makes it continue to happen. Without all of you, there would be no show here.
