I'm reading all this stuff, and I wonder, "why don't I care for Garth Brooks?" I have a whole lot of non-musician friends and co-workers, who'll eat up everything ol' Garth does. And I'm not talking about young folks, but older people who've listened to a lot of stuff. Garth's music DOES feature steel guitars, fiddles, he's got a pretty good "country" image going, whatever that is, his lyrics can be quite touching---So what's not to like? There's a whole lot of folks out there, doing 70's-style arena rock, or 80's pop, who call themselves "country," and who are NEVER attacked as anything but country. What about Ray Price recording with an orchestra? Some of the most schmaltzy, non-country nonsense I've ever heard! The Jim Reeves stuff with that dreadful Wurlitzer piano???
So Garth may not be MY cup of tea---I just can't figure out why not????

Quick easy answer, Steve- none of that nonsense is particularly country either. Including any "country-politan" crud that came out in the late '60's/ early '70's... Glen Campbell was a competent, even exceptional pop artist with a super-talented songwriter working with him; still ain't country and never was, steel guitar or no. That's like saying that Buck Owens' pop flirtation in the '70's doing Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel covers were country... yikes.
As to sales, I could care less. Britney Spears and New Kids On The Block sold hundreds of millions of records over their careers, Townes Van Zant sold hundreds of hundreds. Who was the artist, with the sort of integrity you would like people to see when they think of real artistry?
I guess, though, that art and craft in music has been reduced to programming and marketing theses days. I just don't have to participate.

This is hilarious! Guy starts a controversial post, and is appalled by the "animosity" of the responses. Then "rises above" it all by this "God Bless" stuff.

Pete, I can see you are a newcomer to the forum. I take exception to your comment suggesting that I am hypocritically "rising above" the fray with my "God Bless" stuff.
You don't know me. Many of the folks posting in this thread know me from long association on the forum. Quite a few of them know me personally and several are quite good friends. Pete, I simply reiterated my opening statement and closed with a God Bless. The God Bless is quite sincere. Stick around a few years Pete. The forum is a great place to learn and make friends... even those that don't like Garth

BTW... you might notice that virtually all of my posts contain God Bless.

Yes, Steve, I did notice that you put "God Bless" on every post. I think everyone knows by now you are a believer, and I guess I should be happy that you have seen fit to wish His blessing on me in a personal response, despite the fact that you don't know me, either.

I am not particularly fond of most of Garth's music, but the tunes of his that I like, I like a whole lot. I think that the bitterness comes from associating him with the Rock influence that started to permeate country music in the early 1990's. His live shows had more theatrics than country music had seen up to that point. Unfortunately that evidently appeals to a wider audience and consequently equals more money. The music industry is about money, not music, so hence all of the Rock and Roll B.S. being marketed as C&W. I think that the Eagles were responsible for emasculating Country music and I hold them more accountable than Garth for the fluffy crap that is coming out of Nashville. Having said that, everything I have ever heard about the person Garth Brooks has been nothing but good. He is evidently an outstanding human being. Considering all of the no talent "spoiled brats" singing country music in todays dog eat dog market, I find Garth's personal demeanor to be refreshing. God Bless Garth Brooks!

P.S. As far as theatrics go, I heard a story on the radio about a steel player ( I can't remember who it was ) who was auditioning for Bob Wills. As the story goes,Bob came up to him and told him that he had a solo coming up and he had better make it a good one. The steel player's steel guitar was somehow malfunctioning and he couldn't get any sound out of it, so he stood up and kicked it off of the stage. This must have happened way before the Who and other Rock bands started smashing up they're equipment onstage.

Jim Reeves kicked my dads Fender Stringmaster down a flight of stairs one night after a show in Vegas. That must have been about 1959. WHAT a gentleman!

Garths deal with Wallmart must be huge.

I hope his deal with Wal Mart does not do to the retail music business what his music did to us old Geezers' country music. This post is more about my dislike of Wal Mart than Garth. One of these days the only place to buy anything will be WM. Now I know that is a big generalization but look what they have done. Sam started out to sell only US made stuff, now they will sell anything as long as they can sell cheaper than the local retail store. Nuff said. I am not trying to start a new fight. Some of you will know what I mean.

Garth, with the power of Wal-Mart behind him, is a force to be reckoned with. I shudder to think of it .....

While some knock him and some love him, he has been a blessing to several needy causes...consider for a moment , the lending of his name, talent, and money to Larry Jones' "Feed The Children" (in my opinion, one of the more worthwhile causes) and you can add The Oak Ridge Boys for their continued help.
As far as his music is concerned, my fave shuffle was "Not Counting You" off the first album. The Dance, Unanswered Prayers, If Tomorrow Never Comes...they're all good songs. BTW, I didn't like the guitar bashing either.

I think that ole Garth as a person stinks! I have a little trouble with someone who likes to swing on a rope, unless it's around his neck. And with his marital infidelity aside for just a moment. I do like some of his stuff..{GASP}! "Standing Outside The Fire" "Little Liza Jane" and a few..very few choice others. I've played some of his tunes. I like his music..not his voice, personality, song writing skills, attire, that dreadful cowboy hat, ...but his songs....

Tim, Who's the Oak Ridge Boys?

If it wasn't for Garth, I would probably be a janitor in the mall or a line cook at Waffle House. Instead, G-man inspired me to play guitar and sing for a living. I'd much rather sing to girls in skimpy clothing than flip burgers.

Yeah, cordless headset mics suck. There's no way to work the mic to add dynamics to the vocals by moving back or away from it...it's always right there in front of your mouth. Plus I think they look dumb.

When Garth was playing minor league baseball here in Phoenix, I was really cheering him on. I wanted him to make it in baseball so he'd quit show biz (I won't call it music).

Sombody above said Glen Campbell wasn't country. I don't care, because he's got talent. Raised on Tal Farlow. Can play Tiny Moore mando licks note for note on guitar. Garth can splash fake blood all over himself while he fakes playing a piano. It must have reminded him of his days as a bouncer. He acts like he was the bouncee. Landing on his head every shift.

It's bad enough that Garth is an insincere phony. But if you are going to pretend to be a musician, don't insult musicians by trying to act like a sentimental cornball.

Also, friends don't let friends play Takemines.

I'll leave the last word to Kinky Friedman: "Garth Brooks is the anti-Hank."

Steve,
I think it's great that you say God bless. You are wishing good things for people. I appreciate it. I don't see why you should have to know somebody to wish blessings on them. I hope your blessings and prayers work. Why shouldn't we pray for people we don't know in Iraq?

I guess all the bad luck wishes did not stop Garths new package from selling over a million,a figure it reached last week. Merry Christmas all and its for certain Garth$ Brook$ will be just that. for all the desenters who did not buy the package well apparantly somebody did. 1 million times $29.00 @ 22% fer Garth = plenty more time he can take off and enjoy his new home and family life....,not to shaby or a guy who isn't well liked and barely enough talent to get by....$crew the comeback.
