This is a horrible day in the steel guitar world. Jeff was a true friend that has helped me on many occasions. He will not soon be forgotten.I will never forget Jeff being "my" bass player on the Knoxville show and me being "his" bass player on the same show. I will treasure those videos. And least not to forget the time Jeff asked me to do a steel duet, with no other instrument. This is truly a sad day in my life. Linda and I are already praying for Fran and the family. Let's all show our love for the Newman's by getting those cards and letters on the way and any that can, attend the funeral to further express our love. Bill & Linda Ferguson |

My family and I are in such shock over this tragic and sad news. Jeff was one of my most cherished friends. He encouraged me to move to Nashville and always remained a true friend and a solid rock of encouragement since the move almost 20 years ago. There will be much weeping over his untimely death. We will keep Fran and the family in our hearts, minds and prayers. Tommy and Teresa White |

If you were struggling to learn pedal steel back in the dark days of the mid-to-late 70's, when about the only other teaching material was Winnie Winston's (still) great book, attending a Jeff Newman seminar was such a huge, important key to unlocking the key to this complicated instrument. He really opened wide the doors for thousands of steelers. And he was such a great person, gentleman, husband, mentor. Fran and family, the prayers of all of us are with you in this tragic loss. |

Jeff taught people how to think...how to keep learning and learning. I spent two weeks with him in 1980 & 1981, and my life was changed. I owe my whole musical career to Jeff. I truly loved this man. Goodbye old friend, mentor, teacher and player...you are playing in Heaven now. My prayers are with Fran and the Family. |

This is a sad day for Steel Players the world over. Jeff contributed much to the Steel Guitar industry with his teaching to many of you guys who play so well. I never got the opportunity to attend his classes, but I do know it sure helped many players to learn. Let's all be in prayer for Fran & the entire Newman Family. Nick & Linda |

As most everyone knows. Jeff & Fran were very close friends of ours. We visited their house and they slipped away to our home in TX just to pick and or just to get away for a while. I am still seeking the words to express my feelings. So far the words won't come. We spoke to Fran earlier and then a little later Julie called Regina. They really don't know what happened. The plane just fell out of the sky for no apparent reason. The family said they would call us back tomorrow so as we learn we will pass it on. Myself and Skeeter Black will probably head out for Nashville soon. I wil never again, just assume someone will be here tomorrow. Jeff & I talked in Dallas about what we were going to do in the near future. Now it's not ever gonna happen, only in my mind. Jeff just sent me some material a couple of days ago. He said he would not take any money for the instructional material, he would just chew me out for not doing it right, that would be payment enough. I'm sure I will be able to hear exactly what he would say, every time I make a big mistake. Fran, We will be there for you and the family in person. But you know we will pray for you and the family every time we look up to the Lord. Guys and gals, God just got a good one up there. Jeff & Regina Coffell |

It is indeed sad news. As a steel guitar player, none better. As a steel guitar teacher, none better. As an entertaining comedian, none better. He will surely be missed by those that don't play guitar, but do attend the steel guitar shows. Never a loss for words, nor a beautiful note on his guitar. We will keep Fran and family in our thoughts and prayers, and offer any help we can give......Stoney and Lois |

Our hearts are heavy over the sad news we've just read on the Steel Guitar Forum. I'm a new steel player and my husband has made sure that I have Jeff's courses and videos. We were privileged to meet Jeff at the Dallas Steel Show, and attended his seminar. This talented man will certainly be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with Fran and family as they go through this difficult time of this precious loss.Bill & Polly Holly |

Will someone please explain how in the hell we're supposed to get along now without Jeff Newman........ I heard someone once say that you can tell a lot about a person by the space they leave behind. Jeff Newman is gonna leave behind a very large and beautiful space - that I'm afraid can never be filled. -MJ- |

Reece just gave me the news. Words fail me except to say that Jeff Newman was a mentor and, I'm proud to say, a friend for almost 30 years. He was a man of deep convictions who never shied from telling you exactly what he thought of you, as well as your playing. I loved and respected him immensely for that. Our small community is immeasurably poorer tonight for his passing. We may take comfort in the fact that somewhere else the music got just a little bit sweeter. Our deepest, heartfelt love and sympathy to Fran and the entire Newman family. There will never be another like him. Jeff & Pam Agnew |

Whwn I saw the awful news earlier this evening I was speechless. I called 3 steel players to tell them the tragic news. Everyone is devastated by the loss of Jeff. I always felt he was an underrated player and he definitely was a great teacher. I will sure miss him as I know all of us will. Jeff left this world too soon for all of us steel players, his family and friends. May the Lord comfort Fran and their family during this time of sorrow. |

How I envy those of you who knew Jeff. I never had the privilage 'nor the pleasure. Although I am not a pedal steel player, I hold great respect and esteem for the likes of Jeff Newman who was devoted to the instrument and, from what I have read about this man, he shared his knowledge so willingly. He was indeed a GIANT in the steel guitar world. My deepest sympathy to Fran and his family, and to his extended family of steel guitarists everywhere. |

Just last night Jeff, John Hughey and I did the last set at the Jam in Nashville. We laughed at the mistakes we made, the fun we had playing together and hoping to do it again. John called me this afternoon and I had just got home from Nashville and told me the sad news. Jeff, may God Bless you my friend. Fran, you and the family are in our prayers.Walter and Cindy Haynes |
