I've known Jeff since 1967, when I first moved to Nashville. I too was fortunate enough to hear another sample of his great work last night at our Super Jam. I will always have a reminder of him to carry with me, because; the very guitar I played last night, which I refinished in ’79, no longer had a Fender Decal for the front. Jeff was working at the Sho-Bud downtown-store, and he told me he had a Fender Reverb Unit at home on the closet-shelf that he would sell to me. So, I purchased the unit from him and removed the Fender-Logo Plate and mounted it on the front of my Fender Custom, and it's still on there to this day and will remain. So, I feel that I carry some of his memory with me to observe. You can see the Name–Plate on my Custom by checking my Personal Web site. My sincerest condolences to Jeff's Family. ------------------ “Big John” Bechtel Franklin PSG D–10 (9 & 8) Fender ’49–’50 T–8 Custom Fender ’65 Reissue Twin-Reverb Custom™ 15 http://community.webtv.net/KeoniNui/WELCOMEBigJohnand |

Every thing I would have said has already been said. I was part of the band last night at our steel jam and I am proud to say I played behind one of the best. I met Jeff on my first time at the Opry in 1968 with Skeeter Davis. Jeff was in the Opry staff band with Weldon and Sunny Burnett. I was also honored to have worked a couple of Jeff's jams in the early 80's. He will be sorely missed. My prayers go out to Fran and family. |

Fran and family, May God continue to bless you through this sad time. All our love and prayers go out to you all. Tommy and John, Thanks for the calls and especially for your friendship. This is a hard one to accept. This is the way I will always remember him. Jeff was everyones friend, which says alot about the kind of man he was. He lived life to the fullest, on and off stage, and above it all he kept his heart in the grace of God's hand. His wife Fran was his partner and the center of his life....He was also the steel guitarists formost ambassador. He played and entertained like no other steel player before or after him. I admired him and I always looked forward to the next time we could jam together. His personality inspired everyone he came in contact with. To say he was special to me and my family is an understatement. To say his devotion to the steel community was monumental would most certainly fall short of the mark of his true impact. A giant slipped softly into God's embrace.....Paul |

Like many of you, I just logged on to read the shocking and terrible news. Many of us that fly know all too well the loss of close friends . Aviation is a close community as is this close knit community of like minded friends and fellow musicians. Jeff gave so much of himself as a mentor, friend, teacher and most of all a truely great player. My prayers go out to Fran and the family and to all of you who's lives were touched by Jeffs friendship.Dave |

It hurts me so much as this news sinks in. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Newman at the Dallas convention this past March. I shook his hand and spoke with him for only 2 minutes. Jeff talked to me like he and I were old buddies. I will always remember that. That meant something to this beginner. I will always remember Mr. Newman from his C6th Workshop video, the smile in his voice as he would coach me through the "Oh boy am I lost blues"---I sure feel lost now--------Many of us in the steel community feel lost now. I'm stunned by this. I never had the chance to meet Jeff, but I feel like I know him through all the hours I've spent with his videos. I spent a few hours just this morning with his Right Hand Alpha tape. I started playing steel last year and would be absolutely nowhere without Jeff's guidance and inspiration. |

I really don,t know what to say. This is beyond belief. I keep thinking of the help and support Jeff has given me. When I came back from dropping out of music for several years, Jeff helped me catch up pretty quick. I am so thankful that God allowed me to get out of the hospital in time to go to the TSGA Show on Sunday, as I was able to see and talk to my dear friend one more time. May God grant us all the ability to overcome this great loss. May God bless Fran and the Family and keep them always. This should give all of us a wake up call that tomorrow is not promised to anyone. Rest in peace old friend, see you later. Jody. |

I had talked to Jeff about three weeks ago several times at the Dallas show. He said he was going to play his tribute to one of his mentors Jimmy Day until Buddy Emmons passed away and then he would play a tribute to Buddy, now who will play a tribute to the great Jeff Newman. What a sad sad day Randy Carson |

The great shock came over the ocean. For all of PSG players , Jeff was the first teacher back in 70's. Without him and his course, PSG was not able to get such numbers of players here in Japan. When I started to play PSG in 1975, I learned note to note by his 3 instruction course available at the time. Basic of my play still stay under the shadow of Newman infruence. We all owe him very much. Let me and the players in Japan join the list of the prayers for the Newman family. Rest in Peace Jeff.Buck Nosaka Kanagawa Japan

Word just reaches me in NZ. I am stunned. I can't imagine the steel world without Jeff. He had many more good years, and now he's gone. It is a reminder that we should NEVER take anything for granted. Rejoice each minute. Savour it and know that you are blessed to be able to do so. My heart goes out to Fran. He died doing something he loved. Lots better than lying in a bed connected to a bunch of tubes. He and Neil Flanz were my first teachers. I'll never forget him. JW |

Jeff Newman was a true friend and my mentor. I feel extremely blessed we were able to share some quality time with he and Fran. That night at the Opry with you Jeff was one of the finest evenings in my life and will always remain! Thank you for all the outstanding steel you shared and the great humor you possessed. You will be sorely missed my friend beyond any stretch of the imagination. Cindy and I send our deepest and sincerest condolences to Fran and the entire Newman family. |

I cannot belive this! I think Jeff was a mentor for almost every steel guitar player. I can't think of any steel player that will be missed more for their friendship and advise to almost every person in the steel guitar community. I'll never forget his encouragement, correction, and friendship. -Derek |

Jeff, staunch friend of and pillar within the steel guitar community, more or less passed from us "with his boots on", doing something he loved. His presence among us is something I always took for granted. Let us always remember that his legacy in the PSG community will be long lived and invaluable. All the material he produced to teach both the beginner and the experience player how to go to the next level will be with us for decades to come. That is a wonderful legacy and a blessing beyond description. God blessed us all through Jeff. May the Lord bless his family and close friends, and also the rest of us who have benefitted from Jeff's talents both musical and instructional, in this difficult time of transition. We will all miss him. ------------------ Bill, steelin' since '99 | Steel page | My music | Steelers' birthdays | Over 50? |
