I would support it. But I do have concerns about you endeavor based on the other steel guitar publication issues. The forum is a great tool for the steel guitarist replacing some of the features of a magazine. You get specific advice, equipment opinions, and tablature, which was a major component of the magazines. The part missing from the forum, that was in the magazines, is interviews with the star players. However, the freedom of opinion from a household keyboard has ran off most of the star pickers from the forum. The magazines didn't appear to have that problem because of the feedback mechanism. Most steel playes are interested in the details of their favorite players.

IMHO.

Terry

Yeah, like the SOUND FILES!!
OK, here's an idea, Terry. Do a standard print thing, if ya want to, but have an associated website that has sound files that go along with each issue! Now THAT's a concept! It would, IMHO, be a big drawing card for your magazine: imagine this, you're reading somebody's tab for something, and those who are internet-capable can immediately log on, go to the website, and HEAR the tab being played! Or there's an interview with Lloyd Green and he refers to "The Bridge Washed Out" by Warner Mack, and you've never heard that song. No problem! Just log on and hear a clip of the intro and turnaround!

Now, that's an extra for those who are internet-capable, and does not detract anything from those who are not: they still have their print mag. But I think it would help sell more subscriptions for ya, because NO ONE else offers this, including our beloved Forum.

Plus, you wouldn't have to publish your whole mag online, just have a nice page with the sound clips. You could have current issue, and past issue, or all past issues, or whatever you prefer.

I hope you like this idea, cuz I LOVE it! Ya can tell just from my smile:

As stated before Terry, you can count me in. You probably have most of the equipment to print with and I know you do nothing half rite and that is a lot of consulation. You could put in a pull out center fold a month with a classic guitar a month. Sorry, Smiley you can be in Juvembers issue. THe centerfold could be of maybe Don Worden's steel, purportedly one of the first SHO-BUDS,maybe one of the first Emmons,Eddie Gossiens new Fessy with the Tenn VOLS scheme or hundreds of the older beautiful guitars I've seen rite here on the FORUM. Being new to the PSG world I'd be interested in the history of alot of the players and there background, Russ Hicks's HEE HAW years, Don Helms years of traveling with HANK,(just a little story each month from the hundreds of people, rite here on the FOrum, who have MADE the,PSG world, and History. This magazine has potential and Terry is the man to get it done, and done RITE,and make a magazine for ALL the people in the PSG world to be proud of.Just Monday nite me and my friend Eddie Malray went to a fellas home and place of business, that we just happened upon, and he had 5 steels set up with different types of amps, pedals(Hilton to Sho-Bud) and all kinds of electronic boxes and what-nots set up to play any combination of the above mentioned items. Didn't know this man was within 300 hundred miles of my home and yet he was only 20 miles from me. I now know what my wife feels like when she goes shopping at the. MALL. Just as soon to take a beating as to have to go with her shopping.BUT going to this man's place of business was like going to a Big PSG store.(Hold on and don't get antsy now I'm coming to the point) I have heard of this man in the PSG world alot and you have too. He is a dealer. He's a DEALER in all the above mentioned TOYS and several other items for the PSG. And yes where have you heard of him being a dealer? Yes there is one other item that he deals in. And that is BARS! YEP, BJS bars. Just bars, Bull. Mr. Bill Stroud sells nearly everything for PSG. And if he would have been advertised in a magazine it would'nt have taken 5 years for me to find him 20 minutes from my home and Eddie 20 years to find him. And I would like to say a special THANK YOU to Mr Stroud for letting us come in and shop. So that's the point I,m tring to make. We are fews and far between and we need all the help we can get. So for my 2%'s worth Terry ,Giddy-up,and go for it.

I guess I'm on the fence...I think I would be interested if there was a good portion devoted to the Hawaiian (non-pedal lap), but the most popular steel around today seems to be the pedal models which hold very little interest for me. I'm inclined to agree with Ray Montee when he says there is so much information on the Forum along with the www Net which might make a magazine possibly obsolete before it even begins. Also, a lot of great info is available from the various steel guitar club newsletters. I think one magazine published every 3 - 6 months might probably succeed, but not a monthly. Anyway, if you do go ahead, I can only wish you the very best of luck !

Regardless of the fact that the 'net dominates everything, I still see a place for a nicely-produced magazine - even today.

I still have my old Bradshaw Steel mags - they were 'keepers' (as are my 'London Bus' and 'Classic Trains' issues - strange obsessions, but there it is!) There's something indefinably satisfying about having something to hold and to peruse at one's leisure, and it would be a sad day were our computer screens ever to usurp the printed page...

COUNT++

Add 1 more.

I stopped reading this thread after reply 30 -so forgive repeats. Consider a wide audience, pedal, non-pedal (lap, dobro), and all genres!.

I love mags. The web is nice but a mag is portable, read anywhere, I get tired of 'pull' information, you can archive them, a supporting web site is a good idea, adverts of course are fun.

Check out Fingerstyle Guitar magazine as a potential model. Quite nice - has a CD with tabs for all the music in each edition. Covers every style. Wonderful magazine for learning and saving! I can't wait for the next release to learn another song. Since they cover all styles and levels there is a 99% chance there will be something for me in every issue. http://www.fingerstyleguitar.com/

I wish you luck - timing seems good.

I'd give it a try, although I think an e-zine makes more sense as a business model AND because it gives the opportunity to incorporate audio.

I'd also encourage you to include pedal, lap and resonator guitars for the sake of maximizing your subscriber base.

Fortunately, you already know the harsh realities of the publishing business, so you're way ahead of most people who think starting a new magazine would be a good idea.

Good luck --

Hello Terry,
I am sure you remember me. We had a talk in July 1982, when you were playing a Zumsteel in Opryland, in the big partly open air country auditorium. Well, its only 20 years ago!! ! !
Yes, I will buy a subscription.
I have most of the other steel magazines and newsletters bound by a bookbinder. They are a goldmine of info.
I even have most of the old Nashville Steel Guitar Club newsletters made by Duane Marrs and Cope McDaniel from 1973 to 1979.
Its a good thing you have your own printing facilities, and that you are living in my favorite city Nashville, so you can be in walking distance or driving distance of the steel players to get news, interviews, tablature
from them.
Kind regards,
Henning

I would probably buy a subscription, just to support your endeavor. BUT...if it didn't turn out to be any better than the last steel magazine we had (no offense, Mr. Rask) I would drop it just as quickly as I subscribed.

I don't know how much there is to be said about steel stuff that hasn't already been written, but it might work.

My gut feel is you would be better off to save your money.

Good luck if you decide to run with it, and you will have my support.

I'd subscribe. I did subscribe to the Steel Guitar World mag. and really enjoyed it, at first. Then it seemed like the mag. took a turn somewhere. For almost a year the bulk of the articles featured local talent types that I never heard of. Don't misunderstand, I feel that anyone can and should contribute to these mag's as we all have something to share and learn. However, I think the masses would prefer to hear what the pros have to say and what they are doing and how they are doing it. I like to hear about what others like myself or women steelers or whoever, are doing. Just not every issue.
But, I'd support your mag. just like I did that one, because it would be the right thing to do. We're a small group and we need to stick together and spread the word.

Just because two others failed in the past does not mean you will too. Sounds to me like you have the experience in the printing business and most importantly the passion to provide the steel community with a worthwhile publication. I for one wish you the best of luck and hope you make it big in the steel guitar community.

Don't listen to the nay sayers, if it's in your heart to do this, then do it!

Go for it! Third time is the charm!

Terry...I think it's a very good idea....I remember getting those issues of Steel Guitar World Mag, and, back then, being a new player...grasped at anything I could find relating to the PSG to improve my own ability. 32+ years of playing, and listening to those who really can play, have made me want to continue to improve. What better way could this happen than to have another publication. It looks like you already have the expertise that it takes to get the job done....so you can count me in. Also, let me add something else you might look into to help with the subscriptions. There are a good many steel guitar clubs and associations around the country and world that might could help you out with circulation. I'm the president of one such club, newly formed this year, but already seeing some success. If and when you get this going....you might put a subscription form in the forum in text format that can be printed out, and distributed to these various clubs and associations.....I know I'd print it out and distribute them to my club membership.....Again Terry....Go for it and I wish you the best with it and will pray for your success in it.....HAL
