I am discussing publishing a steel guitar magazine and wonder what the interest/support level is among the players and readers of this forum. If you would support a magazine like this please reply! Thank you in advance for your thoughts, suggestions, and ideals.

I would definitely support it. I was very disappointed when Steel Guitar World Magazine folded.

I think it would be tough to stay current when you're competing with the Internet. In the old days, I would immediately devour any steel related magazine I could find. Now I don't subscribe to any. Email and this Forum is enough for me.

Terry...
I would most definitely support such an endeavor, but for your own sanity, please keep in mind the fate of Steel Guitar World and Steel Guitarist Magazine. I wish you luck in anything you come up with. God Bless You and yours.

I would.

Be careful not to overextend yourself.
History has not been kind to Steel Mags.

Maybe a quarterly or twice yearly?

Joey,

It would likely be every other month. Possibly a first issue being Dec. 15th or Jan. 15th.

Terry, I would not mind a bi-monthly or quarterly publication. Just try to remember that if you get into trouble with it and can't do it anymore, at least let your subscribers know. Most of us would understand. It's a tough thing to run. Maybe you could get some famous player to do a Qand A column. Maybe a different one each time. Just a thought. Good luck and keep us posted.

Craig,

Thanks for the idea and comments. The up-front costs are already available. It's just a matter of whether or not there is a substantial interest between advertisers and readers to support the work effort necessary to do it and recoup each issue... and of course... a few more good ideas like yours!

I think we do need another steel guitar magazine since Steel Guitar World Magazine is gone. I wish there were more magazines about the beautiful steel guitar! There needs to be another steel guitar magazine! Brett Day, Emmons S-10

Thanks Mike,

How about an interview with you for an issue? Perhaps you would consider writing a column too?

Magazine,___no; but I sure would like to see a Steel Guitar Annual. I'm talking about a hard cover book that would sell for around $35 to $50.

It should tell about all the steel shows that took place during the year, have lots of color pictures and lots of colorful ads.

I believe lots of players would buy one of these and it would be more successful (which it must be to survive) to the publisher than a magazine.

Having been down that road before, I would not be interested, what with internet access to everything imaginable and especially the Forum. I've learned MORE right here in two years than I did from any magazine or newsletter. b0b's page provides instant NEWS where a magazine has to have lead time for its articles then printing and mailing and what you get is often out of date.
I also don't like paying big bucks (anything over $2.50) up front and getting stiffed........for whatever reason relating to management.
Subscriptions seldom can carry the weight of the publication expenses and when advertisers fail to pay for their space, the publication is usually doomed in short order.

Terry- a good idea, we need more publicity for the steel guitar.

However , don't forget guys, there is one and has been faithful to us for over 25 years and that is "the Pedal Steel Guitar " monthly newsletter published by Bob Maickel, President of the Pedal Steel Guitar association, for only $25. a year.

These guys need our support....al

It looks like it can be published for about $5.00 per copy + postage.

So, I think that's 24 YES's to 4 NO's
... since I'm keepin' track

Not very interested. Already receive the Newsletter and there's this great Forum. In the future, it would be terrific if an online magazine could be created, just log on and buy a subscription. There'd be photo's, interviews, monthly columns,Q&A, a tour of a steel builder's or accessory builder's manuf. shops(Peavey,Webb,Carter,Zum etc.), photo's or streaming video from conventions and local jams, a drop-in visit to one of Paul's or Sonny's or whoever's recording sessions, all kinds of possibilities. Of course it won't reach those in the steelplayer community who aren't online, it's their loss. I wish you all the best if you decide to go for it with your print magazine, tho.
