What an honor it was to meet Hal and talk with him this year at the Arizona and Texas shows. His smile and that little twinkle he had in his eyes said a thousand words. He is a truly humble and caring gentleman. I wish his family peace, understanding, and love during this difficult time. Hal is in a wonderful place. Hal, God be with you until we meet again.

Our condolences and deepest regrets go to the entire Rugg Family. This is such a tragic loss. I know the International Steel Guitar Convention will not be the same without Hal. May he rest in peace...Stoney and Lois

This is indeed a sad time for all of us in the steel guitar community. I can't say much more than what has already been said. Hal was and always will be one of my all time heroes. I first met Hal in 1965 at a DJ convention in Nashville and have known him ever since. I was fortunate to get to do many steel guitar shows and jams with him over the years which was always an honor just to be on the same stage. We also became buddys or "pals" as he would say. We traveled together to many of the steel guitar shows. Hal and I did a video together in 1998 which is also a highlight in my career. I will miss him more than I can express. Our prayers go out to his family.

I will treasure the photo of Hal, Jeff and me in 1977 at Jeffran college, which is on my Website.
We had a nice talk about his special E6 tunings.
He was an Icon who can never be replaced. He is pain free now and resting in peace...al

I join all of you in the sorrow we share at the loss of another great man. I will pray for his family and know that we will all understand it "Farther Along". I spoke with my wife an hour ago about Hal's condition not knowing at the time his spirit had already left. God speed Hal Rugg.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Rugg, but I admired his playing. SEveral people who knew him have told me what a wonderful person he was. I know his friends and family will miss him, and Laurie and I will pray for them during their period of grief.

Today is indeed a very sad day for us as we have lost one of our dearest and longtime friends. There are no words to express what we feel in our hearts about our loss only glad that Hal is no longer in any pain. He has left a legacy both as a musician and a good friend that will live forever. We have great memories from our times with Hal at the Opry, steel guitar shows, tv tapings, fishing trips, get togethers, etc., that will keep his memory alive for us always. We loved him, respected him and admired him. We cherish every moment we shared with him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and hope that it can be of some consolation to them how we feel about him, as he is truly loved by many, many folks and will be greatly missed. Go rest high on that mountain, Hal..we love you.

Words can't express how we feel.
He will be missed to the max.
Steel guitar show's won't seem the same
without Hal and so many others who have recently left us.
We must trust God's plan.
We see through a glass darkly now.
Someday we will understand it all.

I am so sorry to hear this news. He was a great player and a great person.

I got to spend an hour or so with him at the Texas show a couple of years ago. That will always be a fond memory for me. Then his performance this year at the Texas show was nothing short of fantastic.

Our prayers are with his family.

I just want to say that I did not get to meet Hal like so many of you formites did, but I sure did love his style. I will always remember all of the Loretta Lynn songs he played on, and I listened to so many times to learn to sing. God Bless you Hal for the gift of music you gave us! I know that you are in the lords arms and you will always be in our hearts.

Almost a year ago I was in Laney and Russ Hicks place with Smiley...just out of Nashville.
It was a party to thank whoever for Hal coming through His Illness...none of us knew it would come to this.....I was made welcome by all of the greats......but I got a special thrill to shake Hals hand.....spend some time with him......and when I pulled his leg or said something silly...I forgot which...he just put his arm around my shoulders and laughed..I will always treasure that moment.
I just a few minutes ago called my Buddy Warren Neilsen to give him the sad news and he asked to be included in my message..........................so Hal...you'll be missed but not forgotten

This is another sad,sad day. We have lost another of the truly great musicians, a gentleman and friend of the steel guitar community. My own particular favourite track is "Send in the Clowns" which I never get tired of listening to. I found that Hal always had time to speak with steelers of all levels at St Loius.
My deepest sympathy and thoughts go to his family. He will be greatly missed.

Hal's exuberant voice is now stilled by an all conquering menace. Having seen the devastation it has taken to several friends and family, I must remind you of some things cancer CANNOT do. It cannot invade the soul, it cannot corrode faith, it cannot cripple love, it cannot shatter hope, it cannot suppress memories, it cannot silence courage, it cannot steal eternal life, and it will never conquer the spirit. Cancer is so limited..
