I am so sorry for Hal's family at a time like this. This just sucks.

I know that he is in a better place, but we will all miss him so.

I guess I will never learn the lesson well enough, to make the most of the time you have with your friends, family, and heroes.

Our instrument has truely lost one of it's greatest contributors - as a musician and a man.

May God Bless Hal and his family,

David & Becky Spires

Sad, Sad news indeed. I can't believe we have lost another one of our hero's. Hal's
music will live on long past our passing but to think we'll never again see his smiling face sitting behind that magic steel of his is almost too much. Prayers
and thoughts go out to all of the family.
Can't you just picture the sessions that will be taking place after his arrival in Heaven !

Just for the fun of it,I named our little get togethers at my house The Arizona Carport Pickers Assoc.I issued cards for membership. You had to attend a pickin sessios to be a member.Hal is a valued member.I now have a sacred spot marked on my carport where he set up.
He told me one day when he was growing up in Tucson, wrangeling horses on his mothers ranch he and a few freinds and family members would get together on Saturday nights and pick on thier carport at the Ranch. He told me he had come full circle, started his playing career on a Arizona carport and now back to the carport again.I am so saddened at my heros passing but I know he no longer suffers from a so destroying disease.Rest in peace my dear freind, see you soon.

Where I come from,Hal is a bona-fide steel guitar legend and hero. I first met him when I was in my teens up in Minneapolis. A few years later I took a job with his brother-in-law Whitey Evans, and had the priveledge to hang out with Hal and his family several times back then when they would vacation or at holidays. Ruggsy made quite an impression on me at an early age,and what still stands out to me most about him besides his stellar musicianship was how classy a guy he was. Always cool and comfortable with himself,he had the ability to make others feel the same way in his presence. No big-time attitude with Ruggsy;country radio was proof-positive of his stature. So many times one of those classic intros he created would involuntarily steer my car to the shoulder till the song was over.....some of my favorite moments. I'll miss you compadre, and I'll never forget your genorosity and soul.

Nothing much I can add really, except to say that he will be missed terribly. Hal was an extremely talented musician, and just an all around great guy. This is indeed a sad time for us, but what a great time Hal must be having with family and old friends who have already gone home.

Hal was always such a gracious person to me, as I took photos of him for the North Tennessee Steel Guitar Association Super Jams and many, many Steel Shows across this country. Hal was very interested in his friends. He always strived to get as many of his peers in the photos as possible. I am going to miss you, Hal. God Bless You.

THis is truly a sad day. Once again, just as the day before Jimmy Crawford died, Hal was on my mind last night, so much so that I played one of his recordings. These lung cancer deaths have been rearing their ugly heads lately. Blessings for Hal Rugg, family and friends.

Man, I hate this. Hal was a big part of my steel guitar life as I watched and learned from him while watching the Wilburn Bros. show as a youngster. While I watched him play "The Preacher" tonight on the Wilburn Bros show, I couldn't hold back the tears. We have truly lost one of the greatest. My prayers go out to Hal's family and friends. RIP good buddy.

I was afraid to log on tonight, knowing that I might hear of this tragic event. Hal was one of the pioneers of the pedal steel, and as Scotty told the audience in Denver, this past May, now is the time to see the legends of the steel guitar, before they are all gone. We have lost a great player, a great human, and a great friend to everyone. Thanks Hal for allowing me a small corner of your life, and I know that you will be among friends in heaven, with those who have gone before. What a band the angels are listening to tonight.

May God grant the family peace at this time, and know that Hal was loved by many people, known to him, and unknown as well.

I have had to wait a day or two before I add anything.

In January of last year as I walked off the stage at the show in Mesa Hal was standing by the steps. Someone had just said Hi to him but he stoped and told be that I did a great job. That was my first show and I was so shaking so bad I could not believe it. Had I know he was there I would have been worse. He was one of the first to show me some licks and take time to do it over and over till I got it. It was a pleasure for me to help him set-up at a couple of shows in AZ and some jam sessions. Last year in St. Louis I know he was not feeling well so I ask him if I could help. He first said that he could do it but I went ahead any way. What a gentelman. I have had the good fortune of getting help from 5 or 6 great players all have been helpful but none any more than Hal. Joan and the entire family are in my prayers and on many prayer lists around this country and many others.

May you Rest in Peace Mr. Hal -- I will come see you for more lick someday.
