I too am deeply sadden to hear of Hal's passing. He was one of the very best!!! He was one of the foremost influences on me as a late teenager to take up pedal steel from watching him on The Willborn Brothers TV show back in the mid 60's. My friends back then could'nt understand why I would want to watch such a "CORNY" show!!! I know the LORD has a "GOLDEN Sho~Bud" just waiting for Hal to perform his magic on. Been listening to "It looks like the sun's gonna shine" over and over by The Willborn Brothers. It was songs like that that got me "hooked". My deepest sympathy and prayers to the family. FYI..Eddie Stubbs is going to do a tribute show in Hal's memory I think maybe tonight. John Coop Sr.

My condolences to all. Hal was one of the old-time masters of the instrument, and certainly rated in my book as one of the "big dogs" of the pedal steel guitar world. From his early work with Loretta to his recent "Bell Cove" video with Buddy, he always made everything sound so great and look so easy.

Rest easy, Hal. We'll miss 'ya.

He never met a stranger, never hesitated to help with a question, and was always open and honest with a great sense of humor. God did some wonderful through Hal. Anne and I offer our prayers to Hal's family in their loss, and hope they know that his steel guitar family feels the loss as well. More shoes that can't be filled.

My heart aches with sadness over the loss of another one of the pillars of our steel guitar community. I remember seeing him in St.Louis in my teens. I didn't have the nerve to ask him to sign my program, I made my little brother do it. I don't know what I was afraid of, he couldn't have been nicer.
I don't know what God is doing with all these great steel players he's calling home, but he must have a very important plan. I will continue to pray for the entire Rugg family. May God comfort them all in this terrible time.

I can only remember one steel show Hal was not at and it was because of snow. At the last Dallas show Hal was all set up and just standing there on stage looking around at the people in the audience. I was over to one side standing in front of my chair looking at him when Hal noticed me and nodded to me with that gleem in his eye and a nice smile. It said it all right there!. I will never forget that.

This is very sad. I've been a fan since I first heard him play in the 60s. I am so glad I was able to go to some of the steel shows and meet and hear this great man in person. Hal touched many people.

The first stuff I ever learned to play was the Loretta Lynn Medley from Hal and my favorite album to this day is Altered Ego. He was just a kind and friendly man to all.

Another great guy and player gone, he was always a innovator and a great guy and one of my friends & heros. May he rest in peace and find comfort from his pain and troubles. I talked to Barbara Mandrell and she said to also post her condolences to Hal's family as he was one of her favorite players.

This is painful news to hear.

Hal, you're one of my all time favorites. You always treated me well and I sure loved hearing you play. You've left us too soon it seems.

God bless and keep you and your loved ones always.
