I'm amazed at the mileage this thread is getting. Really an interesting comparison too, when compared to my thread a few months ago of, "how many make their living playing music?" which got about 15 replies. Guess a lot of people are really more interested in making jabs than making music.

Bobbe said he made a mistake maaaaaany posts back. Guess a lot of people don't stop and think that Bobbe has more steels go through his shop in a month than most of us see in our lifetimes, it's easy to forget what came from where and who. Bobbe isn't stupid enough to post on his site that it was BE's guitar if he hadn't believed it was true. So he made a mistake. If I'd had the money to spare I would've bought that steel even though it wasn't BE's, but I admit it would be an extra kick to have an instrument owned by BE or another great player. I don't believe all the too-cool-for-school guys here who say they don't care if BE or some famous player owned a particular instrument. I'd bet if you called them right now and said "hey, I just found out you've got BE's/Chalker's/Jimmy Day's/Lloyd Green's/whoever's old steel!", they'd be turning cartwheels around their living rooms.

Robert, how about this...a steel, guitar, guitar-pick or whatever from the pros, besides being simply an instrument, may also be an historical item, and its' historical value is subjective. To some it's meaningless and worth nothing, and to others, it may be priceless. Witness the enormous prices being paid for guitars belonging to George Harrison, Eric Clapton, etc. Overall, no matter how anyone tries to deny it, an instrument - or any object - that was previously owned by a famous person is going to be worth much more than if it had been owned by an average unknown. It doesn't necessarily mean that the instrument will be any better than another similar instrument, but if a person really admires the artist previous-owner, that instrument will hold a "charm" for that person, in knowing that this intrument belonged to the great artist, was the actual one played with great artists in music history, etc. For some, that's valuable.

wouldn't it be safe to say though that if a pro is selling a near new instrument that he probably just doesn't like it. being new if he liked it wouldn't he keep it.i have seen a few new steels for sale by some big names. at least i think they are celebs.

I think most of us have forgotten the origins of this thread (oh, yes - now I remember...), but it has all the ingredients for perpetual motion - Buddy Emmons' name on the marquee, and a chance to have fun with Seymour. I've been out most of the day, and it's doubled in length in my absence!

PS: Bobbe and I have exchanged a series of invigorating e-mails over the last 24 hours - most enjoyable!

Farris, you're a nut, you crack me up!

Robert, yes could be they're selling it because it turned out not to be as good as they thought it was in the beginning...but I think and from what I've read, a lot of the "big guns" just go through a lot of instruments, with changes in their tastes, moods, plus a lot of them are gearheads like the rest of us and they like to get different axes. Plus, some of them will play an instrument a while and then some new model comes out so they dump the old one and get the new version. The old ones they sell may be fine, or could be a beat-up worn-out old mess from the road. You'd just have to check it out.

Hi Roger......hey, I still owe you one for your "how would you know?" response to my "growing up is overrated" post!

Actually, I did try it for a few years but didn't like it.

Yes, I can see the attraction, BE and Bobbe in the same thread...what could be better, ha! Tell you honestly, in the beginning I din't know about Bobbe, mainly because I don't trust people easily, but I've gotten to know him these last few years and I like him and wouldn't hesitate to buy anything from him, but he probably doesn't accept Pesos anyway...could probably catch one or two of the burros that are always grazing on our hill and trade them to him...how 'bout it Bobbe? Well, maybe not.

I'm still playing my old MSA I bought from Bobbe, it's still doing good. Of course, if it was Chalkers I'm sure I could play it much better! Actually, Chalker did let me borrow his old black MSA (the one he still had) for a while and I couldn't play it at all! All the pedals were at strange heights for me, the whole steel just felt totally uncomfortable, and I didn't dare change anything. Still wish I could've kept it though. What was the subject again?

Oh yeah, picking on Bobbe. Bobbe's a character but I think he's met his match in Farris

Bobbe: You think the controversy is waining? What's the deal with the comment about the fella from Idaho? You don't think that "fellas from Idaho" know who B.E. is or did you think that we all just forgot where we left our pistols. Forumites! Unite. I think Bobbe is calling us Idaho-ans a bunch of "HillBillys"

I think the humor stars of this thread are Farris and Jim Phelps! I've rolled 'til I've laughed, funnied my tickle bone, guess I'm just a fan of steel players, even when they aren't playing.
Roger Rettig, It's almost "Hat time" again. I think I owe you lunch next visit in.
I probably owe everyone on this thread lunch, Oh heck, let me just throw you guys a party. I'll get the girls in the office here to------------>,Oh, never mind--------->

Many folks have asked what Brandella looks like, well, she's the one on my web-site holding the Hilton volume pedal. Now, don't ask me again! (snicker)

How about if it was the first one made and the only one left (there were 2). I have a D-8 Bigsby lap guitar that was Joaquin's. Or the only one made, Reese Anderson's S-10 Bigsby. I have a D-11 push-pull, cut-tail that was Bobby Garrett's, they didn't make too many of those, as well as his T-11,11,16 Sho-Bud Permanent. I have Norm Hamlet's T-8 Bigsby and Jimmy Day's Q-8 Wright that he played on Ray Price's "Crazy Arms".... need I say more? Do they make me a better player? no

Well Bobbe, I"m the last thing from a "Bud Charleton Clone". He's The Best.

I fit all the warning signs of hackdom..

We all have our special "niche" here.

One plays with the ugly ones, one plays with the drunk ones, one plays with the cops, one with the robbers, one plays with the fat ones, one with the old ones, and I play with what's left over. ( Actually it's a really good band, The "John Henry Band" with Artie Bechtel on guitar, Mike Faes on Drums, and a great young couple, John and Beth Henry. They're young, and sometimes there's just no accounting for taste.) My steel is older than either one of them.. We're playing weekends in different places, including Jubitz TS on Oct 23-4 ( or whatever it is.) No more "alt.country" stuff for me for a while..

I don't know if I'll ever "hang" with Don West. I don't know which way he went...

Around Bud C, I always sweated too much.

I worried him I think..

EJL

Honestly, I'll look around. Most of the live stuff last year didn't have the steel very loud in the mix.

To avoid Thread Hijacking, at the time I took lessons there at Oxon Hill, I seem to remember I could have bought the "demo" one Buddy played when he gave lessons.

It was a slightly worn green ProIII, and I could have had it a little cheaper because it was "used". I went for a new $600 one off the shelf. I actually think Harley James and Doug Jones are the only people other than myself to ever play it.

I'll have to include that info when I sell it..

I'm bidding on a Pavarotti scarf here presently..

Gee Chas, who did you buy all those Bigsbys from? Did you get a good deal? Would you sell them back to the guy for triple what you paid for them? Or do you even remember who you got most of them from?

How did this go from a black "EMCI" with a red top purchased in the late 90's to a red "MCI" purchased in the late 80's.

This thread has got more redirection than a OJ trial... ;-)

Respectfully,
