I just got word from Hal's dauthter (Tammy) That Hal passed away this morning at 1:00AM their time. They are going to bring him back to Nashville but arrangements are in-complete at this time. As soon as I get them, I will post it on the Forum. We've lost not only a great player, but a great man. He was a great friend and we loved him so much. This is another void in our lives. Oh no this is devastating ! Hal was one of my biggest influences on steel and the signed copy I have of "Slidin' For Scale", bought in St. Louis in 2000 is one of my absolute favorite steel CD's !I'm speechless ! Ole

Wow, we have lost a great friend. I had the opportunity of setting up and doing a steel guitar duet show with Hal a few years back. What a friend he was to let me pick with him.Our prayers are now with Hal's family for we know where Hal is. "Looking down upon us, smiling and waiting till we get to meet again." I am very saddened to hear this. Words do not come easy. The very first time we heard Hal play back in the 60's we fell in love with the sound of pedal steel, and Hal Rugg's supreme playing. No other steel player has had the impact on my life as Hal Rugg did. Hugs, Thoughts and Prayers go out to his family, friends, and the many who admired and loved this wonderful man. http://www.in-loving-memories.com/Clients/Hal/hal.htm If you would like to contribute to Hal's Memorial site, please email it to me. May He Rest In Peace. Hugs and Prayers Joe McHam Houston, TX

This is truly sad news for the steel guitar community. What a great player and pioneering innovator. I’m sure more than a few players were influenced by Hal’s great playing, and he will surely be missed. Our prayers and deepest sympathies go out to his family in this time of deep sorrow. May he rest in peace. Russ & Jac Rickmann – Houston, TX |

There is no way I can express how much Hal meant to me. I went to school with his kids and spent alot of time at Hal and Vickie's home. Hal taught me much of what I know about steel guitar. I am still touched when I recall him introducing me to people as his oldest son, quite a compliment to me. I loved him like a father. I have many heros but there have been five very special people who put up with me as a kid, three of those are now gone. The loss of Hal Rugg will hurt all of us for a very long time. Rest in peace Dad.Johnny and Joan Cox [This message was edited by Johnny Cox on 10 August 2005 at 02:41 PM.] [This message was edited by Johnny Cox on 10 August 2005 at 02:43 PM.] |

More condolences to the Rugg Family. Hal was a "Super Hero" to a lot of us. We are going to miss his musical genius, high-brow jazz, his wit and down-to-earth "approachability." He was always nice to me when I had a question. I once asked for his Chord sheet for "Watch What Happens" at a steel show in Birmingham and he simply tore it out of one of his book and freely gave it to me! WOW We have the recordings and Bell Cove Video and the video with Herby Wallace he did to help us remember. I hate that I have never seen the Wilburn Bros shows. Of course, I would only be watching for his part anyway. He was one of the very few players who could sight-read music and that for the E9. The whole thing is hard to believe! Rest in peace my friend. There's a cold chill that's came over me as I write this today. Even though I only briefly knew this great player, I will always treasure the memories of one Friday night and Saturday afternoon in Magee, Mississippi. I will do my part to see that Hal's style of playing and music live on as I will play at least one of my songs at each steel show in his wonderful style. Thank you Hal Rugg. |

As a long time fan of Hal, I regret that I never got to meet him and be able to shake his hand. There may be a couple of equals, but surely no one better on the PSG. On one of his last recordings, with Mike Auldridge and Jimmy Heffernan, Hal played the Franklin PedaBro. When I listen to that one-some of Hal's licks on that thing are so sweet that I'll cue it backwards four or five times to re-listen to them. Just astonishing! I feel privileged to be able to read the posts here from the folks that knew him personally. There is no question he was a class act, all the way. May The Lord be with Hal's family and friends during this difficult time. God Bless Hal Rugg. ------------------ Mark
